Socio-politically conscious hip hop at its best,
By Chris Beaman (Somerville, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Catch As Catch Can (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Another great album by Glue, a hip hop trio comprised of members Adeem, Maker and DJ DQ. As stated in another review, Glue's lyrics never bring you down; they are thoughtful and progressive. The beats are very impressive; they're not as repetitive as conventional hip hop, they use intricately woven and crafty sounds, and they really fit the tone of the songs and the emotions being conveyed.
This is a great album for anyone looking for emotionally expressive, socially and politically conscious, non-violent, non-misogynistic, and non-materialism-glorifying hip hop which, in my opinion, is exactly what the mainstream lacks today. Artists that would fit this same description include Who Cares, Sole, Cills, Ugly Duckling, One Be Lo, Emanon, All Good Funk Alliance, Youngblood Brass Band, Deep Thinkers, Ostrich Head, Macklemore, Sun Zoo, Nate Mezmer, and Audible Mainframe.

Glue-Catch As Catch Can,
By
This review is from: Catch As Catch Can (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
You open the digipak album case to find a simple layout: the CD, a list of songs, credits, and a nice little intro written by the band, but no pictures. After popping in this CD, it may be shocking to learn that the rhythmic beats, frenetic scratching, and soulful lyrics were made by three white guys from the Midwest.
"Imagine that the clock was just turned back" is the opening sample to kick off Catch As Catch Can, and the clip does perfect justice in showing you exactly what Glue is all about: Old School. The music is fairly fast paced, with light, quick beats reminiscent of early NWA or Run-DMC. Adeem's lyrics pour straight from his heart, ranging from politics, social issues, and feelings of loneliness and isolation (check out the metaphors in the song "Vessel.") But what impresses me most about Glue is that despite the politically charged lyrics, they manage to never bring you down, the music is uplifting, and instead of complaining about the state of the world, Glue wants their music to inspire change. Catch As Catch Can is an excellent intro album to begin exploring the world of underground hip-hop. Who Knows? The hip-hop revolution might just start with these three white boys. For Fans of: Gym Class Heroes, Atmosphere, and Sage Francis.

This Glue has nothing to do with punk rock. They rock groovy raps.
