From Booklist

Chef Gwen Fletcher has moved to Misty Harbor, Maine, to fulfill her dream of opening her own restaurant. She quickly learns that the small town is full of eligible bachelors, from politicians to fishermen, and finds herself being openly courted. Despite their attention, Gwen is drawn to Daniel Creighton, the handsome carpenter she's hired to renovate her restaurant, Catch of the Day. Daniel is also attracted to Gwen but believes that she, like most women, will be unable to see beyond his scarred face. As the two work long hours together toiling over the grand-opening preparations for the restaurant, their friendship blossoms into romance. Soon the eligible bachelors of Misty Harbor have given up on Gwen, and she dares to dream of sharing her life with Daniel. But when Gwen accidentally opens the door to a tragic secret from Daniel's past, everything that Gwen and Daniel have built together is threatened. Beautifully written with charmingly real characters, Evanick's romance will surely snare readers' hearts. Megan Kalan

5.0 out of 5 stars Positively Endearing, August 9, 2003

This review is from: Catch of the Day (Zebra Contemporary Romance) (Paperback)
For fans of modern romantic fiction, this book is a must-read!

While it includes the fairly typical "romance" inherent to the genre, something altogether different makes it irresistibly charming: the creative and active interplay between a wide variety of characters, all of whom are interesting and full-bodied in their own right.

Our heroine, Gwen, has moves to Maine from Maryland to open her own restaurant. There, she encounters a band of mostly-male locals who range in age from early twentysomething to geriatric. All have one thing in common -- utter adoration of this young, pert, classy young woman who's promised to cook them something OTHER than lobster once her restaurant opens. When Gwen offers to let the little fan-club act as unofficial taste-testers ahead of the restaurant's opening (just to ensure that she's able to satisfy the tastes and expectations of the community), the men practically start to drool. Make sure you eat before you read or you'll find yourself nibbling insatiably! Not since Dickens' David Copperfield is there so much good eating in a book.

However, as is required in this genre, Gwen has eyes for just one of the men, and his eyes are firmly fastened on her despite the rather predictable issues that arise to prolong their eventual union.

Still, everyone from the restaurant's ne'er do well waitress to the grandfather (!) of the male lead to the recently crowned sous-chef is intriguing, witty, and altogether satisfying... worthy of a story in his or her own right. Evanik reprised some of these characters in this novel's companion book, Christmas on Conrad Street, which is a worthwile read all on its own.

Read it! You won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book to feed your craving of sweet romance, November 11, 2010
This review is from: Catch of the Day (Zebra Contemporary Romance) (Paperback)
If you are in the mood for a cozy contemporary romance, then author Marcia Evanick has created a great series to feed your brain!

When Gwen Fletcher decides to move to Misty Harbor to fulfill her dream of opening her own restaurant, she didn't realize she would be finding a town in short supply of single women. She quickly finds out that not only does she have a chance of creating a wonderful restaurant for people to dine at, but she also has become the talk of the town with the single men that are overflowing the town. With every single man in town trying to win her affections, she has a hard time trying to get her business up and running.

When Gwen hires single man Daniel Creighton, the attraction that builds between the two is inevitable. Daniel though does not want to start a relationship. He has a job to do and that is what he plans on doing.

This was basically a predictable romance that you know with every page how it is going to turn out. The author also likes to weave other stories into the book to set it up for more books in the series. This made it hard to fully enjoy the romance of Gwen and Daniel. Once you start getting towards the last half of the book though, you realize that all the stories she has weaved together also fit together as one.

I enjoyed the book, I just wished we could have had more romance between Gwen and Daniel instead of the rush to get them together as a couple. Predictability and rushed plot made this book not as appealing as it should have been. I still want to read the next book in the series though just so I can see how the author plans to expand the stories of the other side characters.

A good book for a rainy day to keep your craving for sweet romances going, but not one you should expect any surprise endings for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Witty Romance, December 22, 2005

These books are not Nobel Prize winners. That being said, they ARE incredibly fun, witty romances. All of the Misty Harbor books that I have read are sweet and fun, with just enough spice to keep things interesting.

Marcia Evanick perfectly describes the trials and tribulations of love and relationships. She weaves several tales into one book, keeping each story interesting.

If you're looking for a fun, happily ever after read, the Misty Harbor books are perfect. Read them in order, so you can really get to know the characters.
