Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-9-- Just the ticket for budding UFOlogists. This breezy, informative book, profusely illustrated with black-and-white cartoons and drawings, presents a reasonable balance between full-fledged acceptance of the existence of UFOs and skepticism. Three kinds of sightings are described; five main shapes are described, and techniques are presented for paying careful attention to details so that observers can accurately record what they've seen for effective and believable reporting. The development of this good journalistic descriptive strategy and recording would be useful for critical thinking and writing in many other aspects of life. The kinds of encounters with UFO's are analyzed in levels; accounts of abductions include descriptions of aftereffects of alien contact. The conditions that increase the chance of sighting UFOs are given, as is a list of places in the United States where sightings take place more often. There is advice on how to take photographs, preserve evidence, and draw maps. The potential for verification is excellent, especially as so many other titles on this topic are sensationalized and generalized. Most of the art features generic kids representing a fine ethnic mix. Gender is difficult to discern, especially with the aliens. This silly book is outstanding. It will be popular, and it will also make readers take seriously a subject normally considered frivolous. --Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, May 6, 2011
This review is from: How to Catch a Flying Saucer (Paperback)
When I was 11, I borrowed this book from a library, and spent a week terrifying myself with the detailed accounts of alien encounters and abduction. I read it again recently and it remains a chilling collection of tales! It's sure to scare your children, however.
