Lisa Loeb - No Fairy Tale EPK

Biography

Lisa Loeb’s highly anticipated return to the pop/rock world after immersing herself in other projects may be called No Fairy Tale, but it’s actually another charmed chapter of her storybook-like career which began in the mid-90’s. She emerged from the New York coffeehouse and club circuits with her trademark Grammy® nominated hit “Stay (I Missed You)”--the ... Read more in Amazon's Lisa Loeb Store

Editorial Reviews

Catch the Moon is a children's album recorded by longtime friends Lisa Loeb & Elizabeth Mitchell. Liz Mitchell is a noted performer of children’s music and key member of the modern rock band Ida. The package also contains a children's book written by Erin Courtney and illustrated by Brooke Mitchell, who is Elizabeth’s mom. The book is based on the CDs title song which was written by Lisa, Elizabeth, Elizabeth's husband and longtime musical partner Daniel Littleton and engineer Warren Defever (also known for his own records on the 4AD label under the moniker His Name Is Alive).

In additional to the title track, the music CD of Catch The Moon features traditional American family favorite folk songs like "Big Rock Candy Mountain," "Oh Susanna," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Little Red Caboose." Loeb and Mitchell also adapted traditional folk songs from around the world including Japanese "Donguri," the French "Fais Do Do" and the Spanish "La Manita." There's a version of Bob Dylan's "New Morning" that sounds like it was always meant to be in this soothing, uplifting company, and a handful of new songs by Lisa and Elizabeth written especially for this project

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Both Parents & Kids April 7, 2005
Format:Audio CD
There are a lot of second rate children's albums out there. Many are poorly produced, and the the performers are often less than talented. Fortunately, Catch the Moon, a new children's album from Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell, isn't one of them.

Catch the Moon is a collection of classic children's songs that have been masterfully redone by Loeb and Mitchell. One of the nicest things about this album is that most parents will enjoy listening to it. I have personally found myself listening to this album even without my daughter being around.

Another reason this album is so great is that it also comes with a board book. It's beautifully illustrated and fun to read. My daughter likes me to read it to her at least once a day.

As a new dad, I've been eager to find good music for my little girl. In addition to exposing her to my own strange tastes in all sorts of music (from classical & jazz to punk & indie rock), I've been looking for good children's music for her. In my search, I've noticed a growing number of albums aimed at both children and parents (they may have always been there, but I've only been paying attention recently for obvious reasons). However, most fall into two categories:

1) Children's songs done by modern artists who try and make them sound like pop, rock, punk, folk, or alternative music. Some are interesting, but kids won't like them much. Parents might find it amusing to hear their favorite heavy metal band singing Mary had a Little Lamb or something. Most don't sound very good.

2) Modern artists who try and write songs for kids. Some are fun (like They Might Be Giants) but most sound silly both to adults and kids.

THIS album, however, is really a great mix for adults and kids. In addition to some traditional songs, there is some new material on here as well. The traditional songs have been gently adapted, not forced into a genre of music.

The key is that this album sounds like songs Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell might sing to their kids (assuming they have kids) rather than songs they crafted just to get you to buy the CD for your kids. It genuinely sounds like they are enjoying singing for children and not just singing childrens' songs.

The sound is also very natural and in keeping with Lisa Loeb's indie-folk style. With a couple of exceptions, you might not even realize you're listening to music for children. A couple of songs are really beautifully done. Like another reviewer here, I gladly listen to this album on my own.

That said, it's most fun when listening with my new daughter who loves to flip through the beautifully illustrated board book that serves as the case for this CD. If you're looking for beautiful music that both you and your child can listen to and you like Lisa Loeb's music (Elizabeth Mitchell is very good too, but I didn't know her before this) then this album is a great pick!

Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars never leave home without it June 21, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I admit it, I'm guilty of listening to this cd even when my son is not in the car with me. I even know all the words. It's a great album of folksy, catchy tunes, good for both adults and kids. My son (14 months old) nods his head to his favorites and will always, I mean ALWAYS, calm down and listen when this album comes on....even at the end of a long road trip. Although most of the songs are old favorites (Oh Susanna, Twinkle Twinkle) the featured one, written by Loeb and Mitchell (Catch the Moon,) is really great, and there are some foreign-language songs as well. Mitchell has a few other cd's that are only available on the internet, so if you like what you hear from this one then check those out as well.
