As a new dad, I've been eager to find good music for my little girl. In addition to exposing her to my own strange tastes in all sorts of music (from classical & jazz to punk & indie rock), I've been looking for good children's music for her. In my search, I've noticed a growing number of albums aimed at both children and parents (they may have always been there, but I've only been paying attention recently for obvious reasons). However, most fall into two categories:

1) Children's songs done by modern artists who try and make them sound like pop, rock, punk, folk, or alternative music. Some are interesting, but kids won't like them much. Parents might find it amusing to hear their favorite heavy metal band singing Mary had a Little Lamb or something. Most don't sound very good.

2) Modern artists who try and write songs for kids. Some are fun (like They Might Be Giants) but most sound silly both to adults and kids.

THIS album, however, is really a great mix for adults and kids. In addition to some traditional songs, there is some new material on here as well. The traditional songs have been gently adapted, not forced into a genre of music.

The key is that this album sounds like songs Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell might sing to their kids (assuming they have kids) rather than songs they crafted just to get you to buy the CD for your kids. It genuinely sounds like they are enjoying singing for children and not just singing childrens' songs.

The sound is also very natural and in keeping with Lisa Loeb's indie-folk style. With a couple of exceptions, you might not even realize you're listening to music for children. A couple of songs are really beautifully done. Like another reviewer here, I gladly listen to this album on my own.

That said, it's most fun when listening with my new daughter who loves to flip through the beautifully illustrated board book that serves as the case for this CD. If you're looking for beautiful music that both you and your child can listen to and you like Lisa Loeb's music (Elizabeth Mitchell is very good too, but I didn't know her before this) then this album is a great pick!

Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

There are a lot of second rate children's albums out there. Many are poorly produced, and the the performers are often less than talented. Fortunately, Catch the Moon, a new children's album from Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell, isn't one of them.

Catch the Moon is a collection of classic children's songs that have been masterfully redone by Loeb and Mitchell. One of the nicest things about this album is that most parents will enjoy listening to it. I have personally found myself listening to this album even without my daughter being around.

Another reason this album is so great is that it also comes with a board book. It's beautifully illustrated and fun to read. My daughter likes me to read it to her at least once a day.

We bought this for the baby when she was five months old almost two years ago in Woodstock at a wonderful little kid's store. What a find! The baby immediately loved it, but so did my then-five year old son. And so did my husband and I--the lovely renditions of folk and traditional and original work are wonderful. It bears the inevitable repeated listenings and is my now-two-year-old's favorite album still. I recently included the cover of Dylan's "New Morning" on a mix I made for my adult friend to celebrate her divorce. It's not really kids' music, at least not only kid's music. Buy this, and if you like it, buy everything by Elizabeth Mitchell, like You Are My Sunshine. You won't be sorry.

I admit it, I'm guilty of listening to this cd even when my son is not in the car with me. I even know all the words. It's a great album of folksy, catchy tunes, good for both adults and kids. My son (14 months old) nods his head to his favorites and will always, I mean ALWAYS, calm down and listen when this album comes on....even at the end of a long road trip. Although most of the songs are old favorites (Oh Susanna, Twinkle Twinkle) the featured one, written by Loeb and Mitchell (Catch the Moon,) is really great, and there are some foreign-language songs as well. Mitchell has a few other cd's that are only available on the internet, so if you like what you hear from this one then check those out as well.

Knew Lisa Loeb's name from a while ago and knew about Ida, but very taken with this really beautiful compilation. There is clearly a market for 30-something plus year old parents who are into music, who then have little ones. We love this and Elizabeth Mitchell's other CDs.

I have my bought many CDs for my 2 month old already. Lots of Bach, Mozart for babies. I play him tons of Cat Stevens, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, even modern mp3s. I got the For the Kids CD which isn't bad, but we love this CD the most so far. Lisa and Elizabeth have sweet soothing voices and my baby really responds to the music! I am constantly singing Catch the Moon and Big Rock Candy Mountain to myself. I really like La Manita and New Morning too. I liked that song from the Reality Bites soundtrack but I think Lisa Loeb has found her niche in kids music!! I am buying more Elizabeth Mitchell CDs for sure.

As a new-ish mom who listens to everything from the Violent Femmes to Norah Jones, I was searching for music that both my one year old and I can enjoy and listen to over and over and over... "Catch the Moon" fills the gap. All of the songs are gentle and easy to sing along. It calms my baby girl down on our daily commute -- a godsend when we're stuck in traffic. She's a little young to appreciate the accompanying board book, but I am sure it'll become a favorite eventually. If you can't stomach over-the-top kids' music, start with this cd to ease yourself in.

She's 10 weeks old today and this morning in the car I could hear her singing (cooing) along to Big Rock Candy Mountain. I can't describe the smile I had while listening to her. This is not a cheesing kids album. My husband and I also enjoy listening to the songs - which makes car trips much more pleasurable. It's a must have in my opinion. Thank you Lisa and Liz for putting this album together.

I am the mother of a 17 month old and we have been listening to this CD since our daughter was 10 months old. My husband and I still haven't found any other kids' music to top this CD!!! Absolutely awesome! Definitely good for parents who appreciate good, creative music. The tunes are still catchy enough that the toddler/baby set will enjoy too. We can't get enough of Lisa Loeb's version of Big Rock Candy Mountain or New Morning.
