Book Description

September 28, 2004

In a sport full of players who are larger than life, Terrell Owens towers above the crowd.

It isn't just that he holds the NFL record for catches in a single game (twenty) or that he's the most feared wide receiver in the game. It's also his penchant for unique self-expression -- spiking the ball on the midfield Texas lone star in front of a hostile Dallas Cowboy crowd, pulling a Sharpie from his sock to sign a game ball after a touchdown, and dancing with a cheerleader's pom-poms after another TD. Never politically correct and always controversial and colorful on and off the field, Terrell Owens has transformed himself into "TO," the outrageous gridiron personality who has rocked the entire NFL and the sports landscape. But Owens is more than touchdowns, dancing, and celebrations. In this wickedly insightful book, he's full of sharp-eyed observations on the contentious, demanding, insane phenomenon that is pro football.

In Catch This! Owens takes readers back to his hardscrabble childhood in rural Alabama, where he was raised by a stern grandmother and loving mother. By the time he won an athletic scholarship for football at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, the once small, bullied boy had transformed himself into a very large man with a super body and an iron will to succeed. He takes us behind his apprenticeship to -- and eventual eclipsing of -- the legendary 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice. He pulls no punches when it comes to his extremely public fight with San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci -- a relationship so sour that they didn't speak at all during the crucial final weeks of the 2001 season. And, finally, he lets loose on the free agent scandal that shook the NFL in 2004 -- and reveals the truth behind the NFL's attempt to deny him free agency, his fraudulent trade to the Baltimore Ravens, and his ultimate happy landing with the Philadelphia Eagles.

For those who think they know both Terrell Owens and TO, catch this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Should "Catch This", October 6, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Catch This!: Going Deep with the NFL's Sharpest Weapon (Hardcover)
"Catch This" is a well written and very enjoyable book about the life of Terrell Owens from when he was a little child living in a small town in Alabama with his Grandmother, Mother and Siblings and without a Father, up until his highly publicized move this year to the Philadelphia Eagles. You don't hear a pompous, selfish and immature individual that the media has portrayed Terrell Owens as, but rather a deeply religious, introspective, highly motivated and decent man, who has an extremely strong bond with his Family.

Throughout this book Terrell Owens speaks honestly and from his heart as he shares his innermost struggles, and challenges in life. He describes what is was like for a very shy and sheltered child to be drafted by the most successful football franchise of the 80's, and play on a team with greatest wide receiver in the history of the game. He describes his highly publicized troubles with the 49ers and presents facts surrounding these events that the public was never privy to. He describes how his Family, faith in God, and a few close friends have always pulled him through the toughest times in his life.

The mysteries of "T.O." are revealed in this book; such as the story behind his developing a powerful and sculptured physique, the roots of his very demanding training regiment, why he started his notorious touchdown celebrations, his quiet nature off the field, and what he wants out of the game.

Has Terrell Owens notorious touchdown celebrations and sideline highlights caused the media and some of the public to show their distain towards him?, sure, but "Catch This" also shows a decent, honest, highly introspective and religious man who has worked his God given talents to take care of all those that are close to him, and offered them a life they could have only dreamed about.

I found this book hard to put down. Its a really enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book made me believe he was the victim, for awhile, July 9, 2006

Living as an Eagle fan in CA can be trying. When the Eagles signed TO all of my 49er friends said that it wouldn't last. TO's true colors would show sooner or later. I then read the book and encouraged them to do the same. TO does an excellent job of portraying himelf as the victim. He claims to need the money for his family and his future. My family could easily live off his paycheck now and well into the future. After reading this book, I was sold on TO and as an Eagle fan I thought he was the answer but then his true colors came out just as my 49er friends said they would. This book should be changed to fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book., December 12, 2004

All the people who say TO is an egocentric prick or something like that are just stupid. You don't know him, you just think you do. You let your judgment be clouded by all the things that are written about him. Why do so many people hate TO? Cuz he pulled out a sharpie and signed a ball or other stuff like that? Like TO says in this book, there are drugusers and dealers, murdersuspects, wifebeaters, drunkdrivers and a hell of alot more players in the NFL and he gets critisized for pulling a sharpie out of his sock. All the previous named players don't get nothing but praises. That's weird. I like the guy, I don't say I know him but I like his actions. TO says in this book that the NFL stands for the No Fun League and that's how I see it. Everything has to go by the book. Players aren't even allowed to have endzone dances. That's lame, grow up NFL. Just read this book and decide for yourself. The fact is that he is a great receiver and I hope Philly will win the big one this year and no I am not from Philly ;)
