5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes is fun to read and learn at the same time.
Great preschool bed time book. The book only uses 50 words and they use them over and over. The child becomes familiar with them and is excited to recognize them in the word list at the end of the book. Nice clear, colorful pictures with lots of thing to see, especially if your familiar with the Thomas the Tank Engine series. Teaches a lesson and is enjoyable.

There are some good things and some bad things about this Thomas the Tank Engine story book. The illustrations are action-filled and colorful, the text is simple, and the book includes tiny flash cards for helping your beginning reader; however, the text is also confusing. In order to stick to 50 words the author has sacrificed clarity and readability. It's not always...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to read to your preschooler!, April 11, 1998

This review is from: Catch Me, Catch Me! A Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
Catch Me, Catch Me is my three-year-old son's favorite book! Using only 50 words, it tells the story of a race between two engines, Thomas and Gordon. It's "catchy" rhymes are easy to remember. The colorful pictures contain other characters from the "Thomas the Tank Engine" series. Especially useful is the back page, which is a set of flash cards of the words contained in the story. Give "Catch Me, Catch Me" to a little one you know -- you'll enjoy reading as much as they enjoy hearing it!

What a great confidence builder for my kindergarten son, who was able to sit down and read this book aloud with little help. He now often reads it to his 3 year old brother, and other uses the learning cards at the end to review words. This is a great series to encourage early readers!

This book was one of the very first ones I purchased for my daughter when she was three months old. I read it to her often although I realized she probably wasn't absorbing it all, but she was able to recite the delightful book at 16 months and Thomas and Gordon are her absolute favorites! She even calls herself Thomas sometimes. We now have dozens of Thomas books, but this one, the *first* one, is still a favorite.

The illustrations are action-filled and colorful, the text is simple, and the book includes tiny flash cards for helping your beginning reader; however, the text is also confusing. In order to stick to 50 words the author has sacrificed clarity and readability. It's not always clear who is speaking, and rhymes are often strained and awkward. Also the lesson is not that slow and steady wins the race, as others have stated, but that Thomas is losing but then finds a shortcut through a tunnel. All-in-all, not the best of this educational and entertaining series.

Our two year old loves this book. We read it to him 100 times the first week. He walks around the house asking for it all day long. Go, Go, Go are his new favorite words now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute. But somewhat unsportsmanlike., October 28, 2004

This review is from: Catch Me, Catch Me! A Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
My son loves this book. Although, to be truthful, he loves pretty much anything with a train in it. I don't mind the book, which is about all I ask for out of his train stories. This one is short and cute and not too annoying to read six times in a row.

However... It seems to me that Thomas wins this race because he cheats. Maybe that's unfair of me. Maybe he just wins by using all of his advantages, ie a tunnel that is marked "Unsuitable for large engines." But I don't really see the difference between what Thomas does and a runner who cuts across the race track and declares that he won his race even though he didn't actually run the whole thing... Thomas comes across to me as a complete brat and every time I finish the story, I find myself pointing out to my son that I really don't think the "victory" counts.

THis is one of the BEST books for early readers. Many common words are repeated. I have many books from various early reading programs(some have too many difficult words and too many different words) and this is one of the best. The vocabulary is limited, just what a new reader needs. My 4 year old can read many of the words.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves it!, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Catch Me, Catch Me! A Thomas the Tank Engine Story (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
My son loves this book, and constantly brings it to me to read. It's such a simple book, I think he can understand it easily. I'm guessing before too long, he's going to be able to almost read it on his own. I think it's a great book for beginning readers. I'm not very concerned about the message that it sends, I see it as an entertaining Thomas story. I just don't see it as a negative book.
