Wonderful sexual tension.

Despite the suffering and gore, Jennifer Harlow imbues her characters with so much heart...and a large pair of cojones for Bea.

Now that I've read the second book I really like this series a whole lot and can't wait for the third book to come out.

TO CATCH A VAMPIRE is pretty much just Beatrice and Oliver working undercover together as a married couple. My only problem with the book? I really loved Will and now I really love Oliver. I have no idea who to root for anymore. I'm not really crazy about the covers for this series but I'm glad I picked up book 1 despite it and book 2 was just as good.

I have really enjoyed getting to know Bea and the rest of the FREAKS. They each have there very own personality to add to the book and they all make it that much more interesting. Bea is still adjusting to her new life but she fits in perfectly with everyone else and is really kicking some ass. It was awesome to see Beatrice and Oliver connect and work so well together. They didn't get along as good in the beginning but as the book progressed you could tell they were growing closer and connecting more. I also liked digging into some of Oliver's past. He is so mysterious and it was nice to get a better picture of him. Bea's brother, wow that is about all I can say about that. I couldn't even imagine being that bitter towards someone, especially that I'm related to. Like book 1 there is plenty of action and suspense throughout TO CATCH A VAMPIRE.

This has been a rather enjoyable series. The characters are likable the plot is engaging and the world is easy to fall into.

All of the tropes are here: insecure young woman who only comes into her own when surrounded by other supernaturals, a secret government organizations that fights all sorts of fantastical crime, and an intriguing love triangle involving the woman, the ethically solid werewolf and an uber sensual vampire.

Sound familiar? Don't worry- it's a testament to the talent of the writer that this book manages to re-invigorate a well known (and, yeah, still beloved by many) narrative.

It helps that the book is funny by design, and that the character of Bea is so wonderfully flawed that you can't help but want to see what she chooses to do next. But what makes this book (and the other one in the series) stand out is that, throughout the paranormal funtimes, there is always an undercurrent of real emotion and fear of the unknown- be it a gang of vampires or the possibility of love.

This was the second novel in a terrific series that I wasn't sure I'd like at first. Having been won over with the first novel, I was excited to pick up the second one. No disappointments for me.

Our telekinetic heroine, Special Agent (FBI) Beatrice Alexander is still torn between her romantic emotions for two of her co-workers. The thing is crime will not wait for her to have her life in order.

The F.R.E.A.K.S. squad is activated when humans go missing and a vampire cabal is likely the transgressors. Will, the resident werewolf is off camping, so Beatrice joins Vampire Oliver undercover. The assignment quickly escalates into a terrorizing situation which not only endangers Beatrice but may mean the loss of one of her team mates.

This story was exciting, sad, emotional, and so well written that I can barely wait for the next releases coming out this year. This is not an usual horror themed novel.

Give this series a chance. I'm very glad I did!

To Catch a Vampire by Jennifer Harlow is the sequel to Mind Over Monsters, and is the second book in the F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad Investigation series, and picks up not long after where the previous book ended.

Beatrice Alexander has settled into her role as member of the F.R.E.A.K.S., but there's a problem that keeps her from really enjoying herself. She can't talk to anybody outside of the Squad about what she does at work. On top of that, Will, the werewolf that she is attracted to is on vacation. But, since she doesn't want him to cut his time off short for no reason, she takes on a job concerning the disappearance of several humans. This puts her squarely in contact with the vampire in this love triangle, Oliver, who annoyed Beatrice so much in the last book.

Where the first book saw Beatrice figuring out how to be a member of this team, To Catch a Vampire puts her front and center. Oliver takes on the role of mediator with the vampires, and lets Beatrice do the legwork to try and solve the case. The partnership might have worked smoothly, if there wasn't the small matter of something from Oliver's past coming up to interfere.

The trend of vampires using an endearment for their human lovers, or female friends is getting old, and Oliver's use of `Trixie' as a nickname for Beatrice, as well as `my darling' got old fairly quickly, and he seems even more condescending for using it.

Another aspect of the writing that is hard to take is the fact that Beatrice never seems to truly get scared. When faced with danger, she says things like `oh, crud,' instead of reacting more dramatically. Having a heroine that adjusts to her new role in live is one thing, but when they act as if they are bored by danger, it seems unbelievable.
