This review is from: Catch The Wind (Audio CD)
I just read a quite scathing review of this album on All Music Guide, and I must say, I disagree with the critic. Far from being a "sappy", "insipid" collection of "wussy" 70s Singer/Songwriter stuff, to my ears it is a gentle and peaceful interpretation of great singer/songwriter fare from that era. Face it rock critics, come out of the cupboard, many of you and us like singer songwriter fare, as well as AOR/MOR. I would hesitate to say this is a classic singer-songwriter covers album, but I'm unashamed to admit that I like it. If you can forget that this guy was an Australian Idol winner, and truth be told, I didn't know until after I'd read reviews of it, you may find it just as enjoyable as I did before knowing that. Hopefully Damien Leith will one day make a critically acclaimed classic, like many of the 70s stars he's inspired by, he's certainly talented enough, and get a great review, who knows? More importantly, I hope he stays true to himself, ignores the naysayers and keeps doing singer-songwriter fare, because this guy is seriously under-rated. Give a bad review if you want, it's a free world, but don't write this guy off! Moral of the story-don't judge an album by it's cover or the media baggage that comes with it. Make up your own mind, listen to it yourself before you read the reviews, and listen to it for the right reasons-i.e you like the sound if it. I listened right through and I really enjoyed it, but I like the original versions too, which, to be honest, influenced my decision. And for anyone who doesn't already know about the Irish/Celts or those of that descent-much musical talent per head of population-but don't forget Jamaica or NEW ZEALANDCheers Anglo-Celtic KIWI who loves all sorts of music |
