Book Description

Ken and Steve reluctantly give up their lawnmowing duties for a weekend of fishing, booze and male bonding. Unfortunately the fish aren't biting, supplies are running low and worst of all ... the beer just ran out. Then, without warning, an alien colony ship arrives in orbit, and that's when Ken's problems REALLY start.

Ken leapt into the hall, saw the flapping flywire and stopped.  He heard a whirring sound, but it was a second or two before his brain connected the noise with the fishing reel on one of the rods, a reel that was rapidly spooling out line.  He spotted a thread of silver stretched taut across the base of the door, and a slow grin spread across his battered face.
"Gotcha," he muttered, scooping the rod up and adjusting the tension with a quick twist of his fingers.  The whirring changed tone, and the tip of the rod began to bend.  Ken leant back and heaved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the shortest invasion in history October 6, 2012

While trampling about in the Kindle "freebie" area recently, I stumbled upon a couple of short stories by Simon Haynes. First I read and reviewed, "The Desolator," a short story lampooning just about every "D&D-style" fantasy ever written. I definitely recommend it if you have a bit of time to kill while waiting for a bus or killing off the lunch hour at work. Don't read it around other people though unless you want to spend more time explaining why you were laughing to yourself than actually reading the story. Anyway, it made me eager to read his other freebie, "Catch of the Day." (I'm a bit like a stray cat. Feed me something I like once and I'll likely come back looking for more.)

Genre-wise, COTD (cute way to shorten the title, no? What do you mean no?!?!) couldn't be more different than the quest-fueled fantasy of the Desolator. They are similar in the sense that they are both quite amusing, but COTD is an exercise in aliens and redneckery. (Oh yeah, I tend to make up words too.)

It's obvious that the author was wishing to showcase his vast and versatile flexibility by making these the only two free short stories out of the dozen or so he's written. I came to this conclusion when I discovered (translation, the author read my review and outright POINTED me to it) that he's also the author of a series of space-opera novels in which episode one is available for free. He made the assumption that if I read the first one I'd be SO intrigued that I'd pry open my wallet long enough to let the moths clear out and actually PAY for the remaining books. HAH! Fat chance!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much plot even for a short story May 12, 2013

This short story did not have much plot. The characters were not developed, but at least the writing was good. I glad I did not pay for it.

More About the Author

Simon Haynes was born in England in 1967, and moved to Spain with his family in the mid-70's. He enjoyed an amazing childhood of camping, motorbikes, air rifles and paper planes. His family moved to Australia when he was 16.

After two years in an English-speaking school - which was a novelty after a Spanish-based education - Simon entered Curtin University, graduating three years later with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Creative Writing. In 1997 he returned to the same university, and graduated with a second degree in 1999 ... this time, Computer Science.

In 2004 Simon was writing his fourth novel when Fremantle Press, an Australian trade publisher, offered a contract for his first three books. They were published over a five-year period, and were distributed by Penguin across Australia and New Zealand.

Simon now has five Hal Spacejock novels, two Hal Junior novels and a dozen short stories in print, all of them available on Amazon Kindle.

Simon is the programmer and designer behind Spacejock Software, and is responsible for popular programs like FCharts, yWriter and yBook.

Hal Spacejock 5: Baker's Dough is his latest novel, released July 2012. Hal Junior 3: The Gyris Mission, is slated for a September 2012 release.
