Book Description

May 25, 2002
The Catcher of Dreams provides a holistic approach to creating harmony of the spirit, soul, mind, and body. It is a creative tapestry of science, nature, Native American lore, and spirituality woven together with stories, analogies, and insights derived from years of the author's experience with Native American cultures and his doctoral degree in health and wellness.

The book explores such items as stress management, money management, diet & nutrition, fitness and exercise, relationships, prayer, healing, risk factors, our image/aura, our environment, and Biblical principals on physical/spiritual unification.

Through The Medicine Way, a Native American approach to wellness, the reader is guided through a Vision Quest, or personal health assessment. The reader is then provided information on how to make appropriate adaptations in his/her well-being (through the topics noted above) in order to create personal wellness. And finally the reader develops a very individualized prescription toward wellness.

This review is from: The Catcher of Dreams: A Holistic Approach to Wellness Therapy (Paperback)
Mark Hilliard anchors his excellent discussion of wholistic health and wellness by interweaving two spiritual traditions, his own personal, Christian faith, and the rich spiritual understandings and rituals of two Native American tribes. Dr. Hilliard has spent years both living among and studying Cherokee and Lakota Suiox tribes, and their cultural perspectives play a significant role in the structure and content of this book. This is quite enlightening, because unlike Western Christians, Native Americans generally make no distinction between the spiritual and "everyday" aspects of their lives. They are excellent guides toward a wholistic view of spiritual and physical wellness.

Dr. Hilliard's seamless integration of these two traditions (he is likely to refer to a Bible verse within a discussion of the Sacred Pipe or the Vision Quest) neutralizes any condescension or dogmatism that often make "Christian" books off-putting. Dr. Hilliard is a seeker writing to other seekers.

I liked the combination of an overall model for viewing health and wellness with detailed analysis and recommendations concerning lifestyle habits, diet, and exercise. And while his recommendations are specific and practical, they are offered with the understanding that every individual is unique.

The Catcher of Dreams will not produce the next fad diet or exercise regimen. That is precisely its strength and why it deserves a wide reading. For those who believe their bodies are sacred residences of the Great (or Holy) Spirit, there may not be a better introduction to health and wellness.
