Catching on to American English gives international students, and especially younger Japanese students (ages 20 through 35) a chance to go through a combination of skills that will help them pick up the meaning, grammar, and sense of 180 reasonably useful American Idioms. Each of the fifteen lessons contains a dozen idioms, which are presented in a good dialogue overview, and then explained, and then 'exercised' in a at least ten different ways, ranging from simple fill-in-the-blanks, to free-form sentence creation, to lifestyle questioning back-and-forths. In addition to this, end-lesson exercises review useful particle words. Also, the material reviews previous idiomatics that have been taught earlier in the textbook rather well. Finally, the language used in the exercises rather 'stretches' the connotations of the particular idioms in useful ways. It's a good textbook. It has a lot of material. It gives a serious student a good workout, whether Japanese or not.
