Book Description

March 15, 2002
In nineteen entertaining stories, some humorous, some spiritual, some probing, "Catching On" chronicles a southern woman's journey to understand her northwest husband's obsession with fly fishing, and how she fits into it.

Anyone who's tried to love and be loved will relate to this couple as they fish, fight, and love their way through: the southern "fishwife" image Carol can't stand but can't shake either; the truth about those "Nice fish!" videos; the reunion of a brown trout and a rainbow; two brands of bigamy; a battle over a bloody duck; enough fly-fishing loot to embarrass (almost) anybody; a force way more powerful than power bait; sin and redemption, British booby-fly style; the first (and last) teeny-tiny fishing rodeo; Carol's tuning into the "fly-fish song"; and much more. . .

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...Moving, poignant, willing to laugh at herself...Should be read by anyone learning to love and be loved." -- Elizabeth Landrum, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, Relationship Specialist

"...a wonderfully written, feel-good love story. This book could save marriages." -- Paul Quinett, Ph.D., (Pavlov's Trout, Fishing Lessons)

"If Patrick McManus was from the South and a woman...she would know the pleasure of having written...'Catching On'." -- David James Duncan (The River Why, My Story as Told by Water)

"We found ourselves chuckling and nodding the whole time-- our husbands ended up reading and loving it too." -- Sally Bastine and Lori Dorn, wives of avid fly fishers

From the Publisher

"Catching On" is neither a "how-to" fishing book nor a typical collection of fishing essays. It is an exploration of a relationship infused with one partner's passion for fly fishing. The author's professional background, working with couples in her therapy practice, combined with her marriages to obsessed men, make her uniquely qualified to illuminate the ups and downs of relationships.

A delightfully different, fresh collection, and a cross-over between outdoor and mainstream literature, "Catching On" makes an ideal gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lively and loving look at marriage, July 2, 2003

I thought this was a delightful insight into a marriage: How Carol learned to put up with a husband (her third!) who was a minister, a psycho-therapist, and an avid fly fisher. That's a potent combination of committements--in addition to a committment to marriage. Well written, especially the descriptions of trout fishing. I am a trout fisherman.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joyous journey, March 31, 2003
By
This review is from: Catching On: Love with an Avid Fly Fisher (Paperback)
I found myself inside Carol Morrison's Catching On. Carol is a fine and perceptive story-teller, a blend of Kathleen Norris and Erma Bombeck. Few books lend themselves to being read out loud, even fewer have the depth, wisdom and wit of this woman's so you want to. I read it out loud to my husband cherishing many moments with someone who is learning who they are while loving a soul so different and yet so similiar to themselves. We've been there, discovering we can do more than we thought and that in the process we're gifted with treasures we otherwise might have missed. Catching On is one of those treasures. Don't miss it. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must, August 27, 2002

This was a terrible book to bring on vacation. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. This was my first family visit in three years and I didn't want to seem antisocial or immpolite!

Ms. Morrison's vignettes were vivid, humorous, insightful, and often bittersweet. Life's serendipiditious moments are captured and clarified in a way that honors humanity - humbled or exalted but always human. It is also a unique glimpse on marriage from a marriage counselor.

Her rich ancedotes on fly fishing alone would make this book worth reading yet it provides much much more. Definitely A MUST.

I plan to give this book as a gift to many friends since it is perfect for a man or woman, young or old.

I just loved it!!
