Editorial Reviews

Father Billy (Steve Little), an eccentric young priest, is forced to take a sabbatical by his superiors when he is discovered telling inappropriate parables to his flock. Billy tracks down his high-school idol Robbie (Robert Longstreet, Pineapple Express, Undertow), who begrudgingly agrees to a canoe trip. On the water, the two men reminisce about Billy s days as the keyboardist in a Christian band and Robbie s as a guitarist for a metal band. When night approaches, they realize they have lost their way - and that s when things get weird. Storytelling in all its forms is skewered in 2011 s Sundance favorite THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM, a divinely bizarre and funny tale that infuses stories within stories until the lines between the Bible, Mark Twain, and campfire tales are hilariously blurred.

There aren't a lot of movies that you should simultaneously not think about too hard and take the time to think about. This is one of those few. On its surface, The Catechism Cataclysm is a road buddy comedy set on a river rather than a road, with buddies who aren't quite buddies, on an adventure to find what they're missing . . . whatever that is. There's toilet humor, indie humor (is that what it's called? Oh hell, you'll know what I mean when you see the movie), physical comedy, and just plain random goodness. That in the end it manages to also be a feel-good movie is just the icing on the cake.

Behind all the comedy lie some questions maybe worth pondering on a serious level. What do you do when you feel like you're losing your faith? What if it might be the only thing you have? Who are your friends, and why are they valuable? Should you really camp out with those two Japanese girls and their intimidating bodyguard?

If you're a fan of any of the actors, or comedy, or movies, or Bibles, or God, or camping, do yourself a favor and see this movie. I loved it, and you will too.

This movie is funny, movies this funny are rare, quite rare. Steve Little is perfectly cast, and the movie is directed with zesty irreverence.

this is the greatest movie in the history of communication, you will seriously love this if you even remotely enjoy any, some, or all of the following: jokes, scares, metal, country, canoes, screaming, crying, beer, stories, and deep questions of faith.

Most will hate this movie, even more will utterly despise it. As for me, I love its weird sense of humor and style. It's no landmark in comedy or in film, but it's an enjoyable ride for the most part.
