January 1, 2001
Robert Barclay (1648-1690) is most widely known for writing the Apology for the True Christian Divinity. But this was not his first important Quaker work. A Catechism and Confession of Faith was written in 1673, about seven years after his "convincement" of the truth, and when he was only 24 years old.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Quakerism Explained in Modern English., August 4, 2008

This review is from: A Catechism and Confession of Faith: Edited in Modern English (Paperback)
I gave this edition 4 stars, but I would have given the original works 5 stars. Dean Freiday's Modern English versions of the works by Robert Barclay are very useful for those who desire to read the works in Modern English, but I personally prefer the original works. It would be nice to see annotated editions of Barclay's works, but such an edition might be too expensive for the purpose of using the Catechism and Confession of Faith in a course provided by a Friends Meeting. Don't get me wrong ... I'm not knocking these translations. Its just that I don't have a problem understanding 17th/18th century English, since I grew up with the King James and Douay-Rheims versions of the English Bible (and later, with translations of the Quran that sought to simulate the language of the King James Version). However, when it becomes time to expose my children to various faiths and philosophies, I'm certain this edition will be very useful.

Freiday's edition of the Catechism and Confession of Faith by Robert Barclay is also handy when used for comparision with various Reformed Catechisms and Confessions.
