Not As Big As Twista Hoped For,
By M. Lindberg (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Category F5 (Audio CD)
Twista returns with his latest album "Category F5" and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. Then again, I didn't really have high expectations after I purchased his last album (the much hyped AR 2007).
This album is definitely a step up from the previous effort, but not as big of an improvement as the Chicago native needed. There isn't anything really memorable about this album, besides the I-Tunes bonus track "Alright" feat. Kanye West and the cut/leaked "Problems" with Tech N9ne. Collaborations are weak too, as it seems Twista looks to find artists who won't out shine him on his own LP. The most notable collaboration comes from Akon, on the record "On Top." The beat is catchy, the lyrics are boring and he needed a song with Akon like he needs a whole in the head. I like Akon and T-Pain, but aren't these guys on too many records now? A song with Akon would have been cool on "The Day After," but these days Akon and T-Pain are a little tiring. Overall, a Twista fan will appreciate this album. It isn't bad by any means, but it isn't a record you'll spin often. The album lacks lyrical content (I expect better from Twista), beats and just about everything. And it's disappointing, because I believe Twista is capable of making a solid album, but he's running out of time...

Twista Dropped the Ball.,

I've listened to this album many times now and I can't really bring myself to recommend it as a whole. There are parts of it that serve as glimmers of hope that the Adrenaline Rush era Twista has made a return, but then those are squashed by too many filler tracks. There's the token Akon feature (vomit), which I'm sure will be the next single released, and a few others that just seem phoned in.
The first track on the album, Misunderstood, is awesome. Great production, fire from Twista, and a good feature from Buk of Psychodrama make this the highlight song on the album. However, just as you think the album is going to make up for some of Twista's recent stumbles, he sucks himself back into his habit of churning out poppy, radio-friendly (i.e. uninteresting, uncreative) tracks. A potentially superb collaboration with Do or Die is unfortunately dragged down by a complete garbage chorus, which is a shame because at first this song harkens back to the days of 'Legit Ballers' and other Speedknot Mobstaz tracks. And in another collaboration that could have been excellent, but wasn't, Lil Boosie is misused in a token weed song. The R. Kelly collaboration, Yellow Light, should have been renamed Red Light, because this forgettable song should have been left on the cutting room floor from the beginning. It's not all bad..although quite a bit of it is. Some of the tracks that are promising or somewhat enjoyable include Talk To Me, Jump Off, and American Gangster. Interestingly enough, the tracks that are the most worthwhile are the ones where Twista isn't collaborating with other rappers (Misunderstood being the one exception). Overall, I give this a 2.5 out of 5 (which I'll just round up to 3) because it seems like Twista is motivated to put together a quality record through half of the album, but the other half comes across as lazy and uninspired. If you are interested in checking this out, I would recommend trying to listen to the songs listed above rather than wasting your money on the entire album. It won't be worth it.

AR97 was by far Twista's best album followed by Kamikaze and The Day After which commercially was his best album. Expecting this trend to continue, AR07 was a huge disapointment and this is coming from a career long Twista fan. Being from Detroit, we have a music style like no other (Bone THUGS, C.C., Da Brat, etc) so we expect certain sounds from our artist and Twista stepped far beyond that style on AR07, it felt very southern and overdone, nothing close to AR97. Well hes come a lot closer to AR97 with this offering in Cat F5. OK so the truth is he does too much with southern rappers that have no business being on his albums (Lil Boosie, Gucci Mane!?) Im not hating on the south but if hes going to go bar for bar with them, he needs someone on his level, maybe Andre 3000, Lil Wayne. "Wetter" is what I think Twista fans look for, "Misunderstood" for example when hes by himself or someone that compliments him, not just for the radio appeal. I hope Twista sticks to this formula for future CD's and I realize artist have to expand but AR07 was not it.

I downloaded the MP3 album as I could not wait for Best Buy to open plus Amazon's price is always a nice savings compared to retail, but as usual, I am hooked on another Twista album. I just love his style, everything from the beats, to his lyrics & sound affects, just flows as cool as the other side of the pilow. If you are a fan of his, get it, especially if you have a nice sound system, the songs hit really hard.

Now I have to admit, was a Twista fan from way back, but then I fell off. My co-worker gave me this album and it sat in my Windows Media Player for about a Month untouched. I finally listened to it today and WOW. Every track to me is a Banger, now I don't really do commercial RAP being from the south but I even dig is commercial songs. "Birthday, Wetter, Yellow Light, Yo Body" are Killers.
These songs, bring me back to the day of House Party's when slow GHETTO JAMZ would allow you to fill on the little girls BOOTY. GOOD HIP HOP HERE!!!!! In addition, I love the Hook Samples in "Talk to Me", good throw back sample, haven't really heard it before. "Billionaire", is a Killer with Busta Rhymes....This is what HIPHOP NEEDS, more songs with artist from diffrent COAST! As well, "Walking On Ice", should be good for the YOUNGSTARS out there...who like the deep bass, and get crunk nonsense style of todays MUSIC.. Gucci did it on this one. Check out this ALBUM!

Tongue Twista,
This review is from: Category F5 (Audio CD)
I am delighted to see that he went back to his roots. He mos def shows growth, but still provides the ole school Tongue Twista flow that true students of this genre of music were missing. The creativity is present with this release. This is without a doubt one of his best bodies of work. He also linked up with R. Kelly, and Do or Die once more (amongst others). It's only right! Hope that he continues to maintain and keep us wanting more. Production was on point. I was able to play it all the way through. I liked that he did not overly saturate the album with unwanted collaborations. In these days you really have to give people their monies worth. I am West Coast by way of the "D" so I can really connect with this. Another timeless contribution to my modest collection.

Twista Does it Again!!,

This review is from: Category F5 (Audio CD)
I have always been a fan of Twista's style of music, his choice of producers, and his unique rapid-fire flow. This album, Category F5, is sure to please! Twista gives us plenty of good songs on this album. There is a balance of street songs, love songs, and party songs...something for everyone. My favorites are "Billionaire" featuring Busta Rhymes, "Yellow Light" featuring R. Kelly among others. If you are a fan of Twista's music, give this one a try. He continues to write great lyrics and the production is great too. This one is worth the money, and in my opinion, it is much better than his last album.

Twista can still shine,

although i would like something new from twista besides the same "touchin booties" "smokin droe" ryhmes, Twista is a unbelievable talent who i listen too and wonder how he outshines everyone including himself. there r a few tracks on here which should be skipped. But after listening to it twice, his skill cannot be compared too. He may not have as much to say like a Jay Z or a Nas back in the day, but he will rip u up style wise. I enjoy listening over and over to find out "what did he say". So over all I give twista 4 stars for not changin what got him here, and adding a bit more creativity. Its no adrenaline rush (original) Go ahead and cop it
Top joints for me : Talk to me - spittin hot fire Yellow light - nice and very different walkin on ice - nice joint yo body - welcome back Do or Die, (twista still gets both of you as usual) Jump off - vintage Twista (flow sick)

Finally Some New Twista...Worth The Wait!,
By
This review is from: Category F5 (Audio CD)
I haven't had any new Twista jams since Kamikaze back in 2004. Ive come across a few mix tapes and tracks online but nothing that really caught my ear so to speak.
I picked this up yesterday and have been very impressed. Lots of other artists appear on the album, including R.Kelly, Gucci Mane, Static Major, and Liffy Stokes. So far from beginning to end the entire album has been great. Lots of "slow jams" with a nice mix of up beat tracks. Its one of those albums that's full of good songs, not just the one hit wonder you heard on the radio. I would highly recommend Category F5, especially if you like Twista's super smooth and fast lyrical skills. Ive found the whole album to be quite enjoyable...but here's my top 3 tracks. 1. Gotta Get Me One (feat Static Major) 2. Yellow Light (feat R.Kelly) 3. Walking On Ice (feat Gucci Mane, OJ the Juiceman) On thing I would have liked to see is a track with T Pain, I think these two could easily make a "club hit" that would be played everywhere!
