Book Description

3 and up
Turn each die-cut page to watch each fuzzy caterpillar disappear and a beautiful, foil butterfly appear in its place!

Five sleepy caterpillars--yellow, purple, green, blue, red--
All snuggled up on a soft leaf bed.
Yellow caterpillar wiggle jiggle wiggle free.
Yellow caterpillar, what will you be?

Count backwards from five to one as colorful caterpillars change into gorgeous foil butterflies with each turn of the die-cut pages! The caterpillars are affixed to the last spread of the book and show through the die-cut pages. This is an eye-catching, interactive introduction to the miracle of metamorphosis!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–In this confusing book, five caterpillars, each with a nondescript body and different colored head, transform directly from the caterpillar stage to the butterfly stage. The text, which repeats itself for each of the five insects, is very brief: "Wiggle-wiggle, jiggle free./Yellow caterpillar, what will you be?/A big yellow butterfly/just for me!" The caterpillars are shown on the right-hand side, and when readers turn the page, they discover an appropriately colored foil butterfly. On the final spread, all five brilliantly hued creatures dance in the sky. The sturdy, plastic-coated pages and the repetitive language suggest that this book is for toddlers. However, the author has tried to incorporate color identification, counting, and an inaccurate introduction to metamorphosis into one story, a mix of concepts that may be beyond the scope of the intended audience. Stick with Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Philomel, 1981) or Jack Kent's The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (S & S, 1982).–Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, September 25, 2011
This review is from: Caterpillar Dance (Board book)
I think this book is wonderful! I am a special education teacher for kids with cerebral palsy and they loved this book! The pages are colorful, repetitive, and tactile. I recommend this story to preschool age or special education children.

3.0 out of 5 stars doesn't live up to expectations, April 29, 2005
This review is from: Caterpillar Dance (Board book)
I was a little disappointed when I bought this book. The images are wonderful with somewhat fuzzy butterflies to feel and the foil wings...however, the story itself is not that great. It says the same thing for each page except the colors change for each different butterfly. Younger kids that like repetition and like being able to "read along" with the story will probably enjoy it but I thought it needed more of a story line to it.
