Great for Special Purposes,
By Robert W. Chambers "author and builder" (Wisconsin and New Zealand) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Caterpillar Men's Corax Mid Cut Steel Toe Boot (Apparel)
The Corax boots have a very unusual sole--little flexible rubber cylinders with their ends pointing down. The rubber is definitely soft. So, for special purposes, these boots are ideal. I get better traction on steep grassy slopes than with any other boot or shoe I've owned. And they form around and grip to logs (I'm a log home builder) Log Construction Manual: The Ultimate Guide to Building Handcrafted Log Homes, and they do not leave black marks on the logs.
But if you spend time on hard surfaces like concrete, I'll bet these could wear out fast. Bottom line--for me, the benefits far outweigh the faster-than-normal wear I'm expecting on the soles. And it looks like they cannot be re-soled. So, 4 stars for a special-purpose boot.

Doesn't stand up to the desert,
This review is from: Caterpillar Men's Corax Mid Cut Steel Toe Boot (Apparel)
This is my second pair of Wolverine boats, yes that's right Wolverine licensed the Caterpillar name. The boots are comfortable once broken in and the leather is very durable. For this part they are a great pair of boots. The problem is the soles start falling apart immediately after walking on the rocks and sand were I work. My other pair did this too; the softer rubber can't take walking on constant rocky surfaces. I would sent them back and try another pair, but since it takes weeks to get them here I will suffer through the wear.
