Another Fine Book by Jack Kent - a review of "The Caterpillar and the Polliwog",
This review is from: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Paperback)
We love "The Caterpillar and the Polliwog". It's just a wonderful (classic) tale that appeals to children and adults alike. We read it as part of our science unit on critters that start as one thing and become another. The book does a great job of bringing home the fact of metamorphosis. I think it even does a better than the science books because of the story.
It was also the first play that we ever managed to pull off. Kids just seem to have a knack for remembering the lines of the bragging-sassy caterpillar and the silly polliwog; and it is easy to pretend to form a cocoon with a blanket. Five Stars. I love books that do double duty; and with the "Polliwog and the Caterpillar" get you get a great story and a science lesson.

I'm OK--You're OK: For Children,
By Paul Martin (Waukesha, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Caterpillar And The Polliwog (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (School & Library Binding)
A neat story that 3-7 year-olds will surely enjoy. The story is about a proud female caterpillar who boasts to all of her friends that when she grows up, she will turn into something else. She meets a polliwog and relates this story to him, he is facinated. Later, the polliwog learns that he too will change into something else, although he belives he'll change into a butterfly. In the end, the story ends happily when the polliwog learns to love himself for who he is.First-rate illustrations, entertaining and unique story.

Funny for Kids and Adults Alike,

This review is from: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Paperback)
This is a really great story to read to your kids and to have your kids learn to read. It's not too short and not too long. It has both a moral lesson and a humor factor. Just as funny to adult readers as it is to the kids.

Funky but very fun!,

This review is from: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Paperback)
This book does an excellent job of introducing young children to the basic facts of caterpillar and frog life cycles, how they are alike and how they are different. The anthropomorphic bent takes a little getting used to, but it's not a bad quality. Giving the animals in the story personalities makes the tale more engaging and adds another layer of interest. The story has a sense of humor that kids and adults will enjoy. The cartoon-like pictures are fun too. There's a nice subtle message to go along with it--some of us take a little more time to metamorphize than others, but we get there eventually!!

A great teaching tool . . .,
This review is from: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Paperback)
I keep this book in my classroom and use it as a teaching tool whenever we talk about frogs and tadpoles or caterpillars and butterflies. It explains the life cycle of both! But the best lesson it teaches is to be happy to be who you are.

I was introduced to this book at my grandmother's funeral. The pastor read the story of how the animals were going to change into something better, then she handed it to my 7 year-old son to look at during the rest of the service. I felt it was so worthwhile I purchased a copy for his school library. There are many lessons that can be drawn from this simple story.

Jack Kent strikes again with whimsical characters in this tale of two little folks and their changes. I didn't like this book as much as _Socks for Supper_ or _Clotilde_, but with so many Kent titles unavailable, I was glad to find it! There are some funny lines in the dialogue, and the illustrations are very engaging. A very good book for the read-aloud set.

Book for summer camp,

This review is from: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog (Paperback)
Our summer reading camp selected this book to distribute to each child as a remembrance of the camp (our theme was camping and the great outdoors) and to take home as a piece they could read or have read to them. When I ordered the books they were listed as "in-stock." I ordered 80 books. The first 23 came right away but the remaining didn't show up until it was almost too late to distribute them. They did however surface, were passed out and the children were delighted but it could have been a disaster. That's why my rating dropped to 4 stars instead of 5. The book was delightful but the shipping delay caused a few gray hairs!

A former early-grades teacher read this book to a group of mature women after a dinner at our club. She had two soft dolls, one a polliwog and the other a caterpillar, which, as she read the story, she slowly unzipped an turned inside out. At the end, when both animals achieved their new form, she lifted the dolls and shook them to their full expansions. (Made by "Folk People" or similar name) It's a delightful book with tender personalities.
