4.0 out of 5 stars A very good cycling computer

I have been a cyclist for many decades and am not a neophyte at using cycle computers. This was one of the harder ones to program and update. After the time change, and less then a month on a road bike, it refused any change in settings. Totally worthless to me at that point and I went to my local shop and bought a different brand. This was my first and will be my last...

I bought the Cateye CC-AT200W Adventure Wireless Bicycle Computer last month to put on my new touring bike. I've used it for about 200 miles so far and have been pleased with it.

The main reason for getting this unit was I wanted altitude gain as well as the usual speed, distance, maximum speed, and average speed. This unit does not measure cadence and I really had no interest in it, so if that's something important to you, you should look elsewhere. During a two-day ride on the Great Allegheny Passage, the altitude gain measured just under 3,000 feet which was well within 100 feet of the published value, so I was quite pleased with that. I also very much like the automatically measured riding time (a manual mode is also available) which starts and stops within a second or two.

The reason I didn't rate this unit 5 stars is that the initial setup is not totally straightforward as the directions are quite condensed. It took me several tries before I got the hang of the terminology and the logic. Additionally, the buttons on the back are quite small and I ended up using a pencil eraser to push them instead of fingers, especially when I needed to push two at once. Now that I've been using it a bit, it's actually quite easy to use on an everyday basis, but I can see some people getting a little frustrated initially until they get the hang of it. More clearly written directions would eliminate most problems in my opinion. Note that directions are given in many languages, so they'll be one for you no matter where you live.

Overall, I am pleased with the unit and would get it again. It provides the data I'm looking for and the wireless attachment to the bike is a breeze and quite secure. Given I've used a lower-end Cateye unit on my old bike for five years without any problem, I fully expect this unit to provide good service for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice monitor, January 7, 2011

I bought this to track my biking through the allegheny mountains. I love the temperature and altitude features, which my previous Bell's didn't have.

Very simple to setup, great wireless connectivity and very accurate. Also love the fact that it has a clock (which my Bell's didnt have). It doesn't come with a cadence monitor, but I didn't care about that.

Definitely looking forward to logging hundreds of miles on this badboy!

4.0 out of 5 stars The MTb computer, June 29, 2011

Cateye adventure is light, easy to use and there's a good visibilty, even at the sun light.
The % of inclination and the meters of climbing are extremely useful to know how hard is the track.
The adust of high is lit bit complex and hard to urderstand and to set correctly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!, December 28, 2011

This computer seemed to work well at first. After about 3 months, it would not register the speed. The display would light up but after a while would simply go to sleep, despite adjustments to the magnet and sensor at the wheel and repeated battery changes to both the sensor and the main unit. It simply quit working. My husband has the exact model and the exact same thing happened to his. Do not buy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Temperature measurement is completely wrong, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Cateye CC-AT200W Adventure Wireless Bicycle Computer (Sports)
I just bought this unit. While trying to figure out how to set it up, I noticed that it said that the temperature in my living room was 83F. My thermostat says that the temperature is 69F, and it feels like 69F. I took the unit outside where the mercury thermometer says that it is currently 53F. I left the unit sitting outside for 25 minutes. It says that the temperature is 62F. I brought the unit back inside. After 5 minutes sitting inside it still says 62F.

The (very poorly) written instructions say that the altitude is calculated using a combination of atmospheric pressure and temperature changes. If the unit can't measure a constant temperature anywhere close to accurately, I have no confidence that it will accurately measure pressure or come up with an accurate altitude reading.

I'm not impressed. I'm returning the unit tomorrow.

Oh, and the "SSL" (don't know what that means) button on the front is a TINY ball-bearing that is pretty much impossible to press.

Got it on (huge) sale, but I wanted it anyway for the altimeter and all the other functions. Once you figure out how to set it up you are good, and after you are done you put it on the handlebar and you don't need to access the buttons on the back any more. I had it for 2 weeks now and I like it, it gives me the altitude difference on a ride, slope (percentage) degrees and all that stuff, including temperature on the spot (not what your phone says what weather.com says!). The only problem is with the altimeter that is not working when the unit is in sleep mode (basically when you are not riding). So you leave one trail and next time the next trail starts at the same altitude, it doesn't adjust, or I didn't figure it out yet (if you have the answer plz let me know). Also, it doesn't fit a thicker mountain bike stem, you need to purchase some adaptor for that, but I mounted it on my handlebar and it's OK.

I consider myself pretty tech savvy and I could not get this computer to work properly. First of all, it is a small display. If you have trouble reading numbers while cycling, this computer will make it even more difficult. The instructions are poorly written. The buttons make it very difficult to use because one button is on the back of the computer. In order to press that button, you have to press down on the body of the computer. The entire design of this computer is just not user friendly. I returned mine after one ride. I was very disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor buttons, July 5, 2011

I was in the market for a new cycle computer for my new crossbike. I had read about this model so I was roughly familiar with it and knew it had all the features (and more) I was looking for. I was at a Performance Bike store picking up a spare inner tube and noticed they had the CatEye Adventure on clearance for $89.00 plus other 15% off on the day I was there. I made an impulse buy because I knew this unit was going for a lot more elsewhere. As soon as I got it home and unpacked it I was amazed at how poor the buttons were on this unit. On the BACK there are three tiny buttons -- the "mode" button, a "set" button, and a recessed "reset" button. On the front is an odd metal nub that serves a variety of functions. I set up the unit, which involves heavy use of the buttons on the back of the unit. I didn't mount the unit on my bike, but I did put the computer in the handlebar bracket -- that's when I discovered how the buttons work. Essentially all user interface is by using the little metal nub on the front and literally pushing the computer firmly enough that the whole unit sort of rocks in the handlebar bracket, thereby pushing the mode button on the bottom. I've never seen such a strange interface. On top of that, the little metal nub on the front doesn't provide any tactical feel at all. I immediately packed it up and returned it to Performance the next day.

The Adventure's functions may work wonderfully, but the button arrangement is definitely the worst I've ever seen (I've used about 5 cycle computers over the years).
