4.0 out of 5 stars Very functional, remembering configuration sequences can be a challenge
This is my first cycling computer and I've been happy with it. I've owned it for about 4 months and have done dozens of rides with a total of over 400 miles on the odometer. It is easy to ride and switch between the different viewing modes and is easy to read even in sunlight.

This product is very functional and works as advertised. I really like the "auto...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice bike computer with cadence and rear wheel function
I bought this computer at my local bike shop as I wanted one that measured cadence and could attach to the rear wheel to use with an indoor trainer (Cycle Ops Fluid 2). The setup was a bit challenging for me, but it always takes me twice as long to put things together. I had it on my bike and working in around 45 minutes.

I really like the "auto start" mode where the odometer and elapsed time start automatically when wheel rotation is detected. Without it I would forget to restart the timer often.

As noted in other reviews the various combinations of button pushes are a bit cryptic and take some practice getting to remember. I'll eventually dig out the manual again to figure out how to set the time to DST :-) ... or maybe I'll just wait until the time is right again! Actually, the one that bugs me the most is the "trip meter reset" which I usually end up having to try two or three different times to get it right.

The one feature I wish it had was an "cycle through modes" option where the values displayed would automatically cycle through the secondary display modes (avg speed, max speed, elapsed time, trip, odometer) without having the press a button on the unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just What I Expected, July 29, 2006
I recently purchased this to replace an older broken computer. The cadence helps significantly with training. Wireless is always nice, but considering price this computer is perfect. It was easy to install and is easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for indoor resistance training!, February 23, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this computer to replace another Cateye that was a front-wheel sensor (speed/distance) because I recently started using a resistance trainer indoors and needed crank (cadence) and rear-wheel (speed/distance) sensors. Nice features and easy to mount and wire.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice bike computer with cadence and rear wheel function, December 15, 2007
This review is from: Cateye CC-CD200 Astrale 8-Function Bicycle Computer (Sports)
I think the attachment hardware could be designed better. The numbers are a bit too small to see easily with my 43 year old eyes. It does function well and is simple to reset and gives me all the numbers I need: speed, top speed, average speed, time of ride, cadence, and odometer. I think it is a bit overpriced. Overall I like it despite these minor issues. The bike shop staff told me that wireless units don't have the range to attch to the rear wheel, so thats why I bought the wired version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cateye Astrale 8, June 15, 2011

I purchased the cateye astrale 8 for three reasons 1) it had a cadence function, 2) it had a rear wheel speed sensor mount, 3) it was reasonably priced for the functions it has. I received the unit and had it installed in less than 1 hour. I have put about 200 miles on it so far with no issues at all. For the price it is a great unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice computer, October 28, 2009
This review is from: Cateye CC-CD200 Astrale 8-Function Bicycle Computer (Sports)
I got frustrated with wireless computers. Either the battery was dead, or there was too much interference. Whatever the problem, I decided to try this one. The unit is very reliable and I have never had a problem getting a signal. I guess the only problem is it's hard to take the wire off for cleaning the bike. My bike mechanic did such a good job of attaching the wire to my bike frame. If you don't do a good job, you'll have loose wires which look bad. My advice: see if your mechanic can put it on for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good basic function bike computer., May 5, 2009
This review is from: Cateye CC-CD200 Astrale 8-Function Bicycle Computer (Sports)
I had good luck with my Cateye Astrale. The cadence function stopped working after about 2K, but the main functions worked until I'd put about 6K on it. After that the start-stop button was worn out, but by that time I felt I'd gotten my money's worth out of the computer. I find it easy to see and use on the road, and the owners manual instructions didn't seem any worse than most I've seen. It would be nice to have a 2nd trip odometer sometimes, but if the functions that it provide are all that you need, then I'd recommend it (I just bought a duplicate to replace my original).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great cycle computer., February 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have purchased my second Astrale 8 and although others were available, I wanted the same thing for my wife. We are currently working out together on 2 trainers (Colorado Winter).

I have put over 2300 miles on mine and it has served me quite well. I gave it one star short because I wish the screen titles could have been made with a larger font. Still, you learn what the settings are vs. trying to read them. I'm still using the same battery!

The unit is easy to remove when leaving the bike unattended.

I would let your installer know if you are using a trailer. They may need to adjust the sensor mounting so that you can attach and remove the trailer without disturbing the unit sensor position.

The unit is well made, and as you can see, has given me excellent service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good computer, March 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cateye CC-CD200 Astrale 8-Function Bicycle Computer (Sports)
This is the fourth Cateye Astrale computer that I have owned.
They are dependable and I love having the cadence function.

The only thing I would improve is the flimsy rubber pieces that are used to hold the cadence and speed sensors in place. You must take your time when using the zip ties to secure them to the frame. If they were firmer, it would be easier. At least they can be used on larger chainstays unlike the older plastic pieces.
