What a Solid Album. The music reminds me alot of the late 80's. Well written honest music with no slick studio tricks. I cant wait to see these guys live. That seems to be the problem, They are hard to catch. well worth a listen!

A friend of mine heard these guys on a radio show in Philly and said they were great. I bought the album and must say that I agree whole heartedly. The music is well crafted with insightful and intelligent lyrics. I am particuarly found of "no where fast" the lyrics "I've been swimming in a fountain for pocket change, All I found was bottle caps and wedding bands" man...good stuff. This album was an unexpected surprise and I HIGHLY reccomend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Old Sound, November 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Catfish Saturday (Audio CD)
I love the fact that the sound this album generates is a total tribute to the band's influences and originality. In an time of every "alternative radio" song being based on someone's dark social views or anti-social skills, this album is a welcome change. Cowboy Song, Angels in my Room, Broken Receiver and Ultimatum all stay with you even after one listen. This album has great melodies and thought provoking lyrics, I think I'll pop it back in now... '

5.0 out of 5 stars Showgoats - Get the CD because its hard to see the band!, November 22, 2001

These guys are obviously very talented. They also are a sort of cult band in our area. You hear that the band played somewhere right after it happened, but its hard to actually catch them anywhere. The few people who have seen them, myself included, were astonished they weren't better known. Apparently, the band makes a point of not being promoted.

The CD will undoubtably remind you of REM. The riffs and vocals are very similar. There is also an aspect of garage-band Rock & Roll, only the music is much more tight than any garage band. The lyrics range from poignant to funny.

The guitar sound is a bit unique; the bass player keeps his part fast and simple, but if you listen carefully, you'll notice an almost zen-like smoothness that is occasionally interrupted by a deliberately dropped note or a slow change.

This might be the best CD you'll ever have from a band that almost nobody has seen. The sound is different enough that if you play it for someone without commenting, they'll make a point of asking you who it is and where to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Showgoats Really Rock!, June 21, 2001
By

The Showgoats have an excellent sound, a blend of country and rock and roll. As the managing editor of Fresh Air on-line teen magazine, I highly recommend this up-tempo album, "Catfish Saturday". The first strains into the first song guarantees that this album is a winner. The rhythmic beats keep the up-tempo songs fresh until the very last note. The guitar playing on this album is amazing, providing the catchy hooks in each tune, like in my favorite one, "Cowboy Song". I bobbed my head to each original-sounding song, most of which were written by the band.

I think everyone will find something to love about this album. Its country influence provides a folksy flavor and a familiar, cozy atmosphere. Also in the mix is some old-fashioned rock and roll guitar rifts, infusing each song with spice. You'll find yourself singing along to the songs. The honest-sounding vocals blend with the music, making the already terrific ballads even better.

Each instrument invokes its own special essence. The drums really kick up the tune "Falling Down," with its fast, up-tempo beats. The guitar and drums play a major role in each song, and the great vocals are the icing on the cake.

The Showgoats' "Catfish Saturday" is a must-listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars respectable body of work, December 14, 2000

I make it a point to check out independent music when I run across it. I have listened to a lot of "Indie" music that deserves to stay that way, so that no body else hears it'; however, this album is a credit to the independent genre. I dont know of these guy s like it this way, or if as usuall the record labels have turned a deaf ear. If it is the later I hope the industry wises up. This album is a wonderful mix of old and new. Meaning, they seemed heavily influenced by late 80's college rock, which is was a great scene. They have added some modern twists to bring this genre back and make it there own. I am very impressed. I would rate this album an 8 out of 10 and definetly will include it in my Cd choices for a great pick me up durring a long drive.

These guys are from my home town of Charlotte NC. I have seen them play several times and thourghly enjoyed them, but this album beats all. They have risen to a new level with this CD. The songs are up beat and catchy, stuffed with hooks and melodies that wont leave your head. It is currently #1 in my personal CD rotation.
