From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- The narrative thread of this story of the construction of a cathedral follows a boy, Etienne, who is apprenticed to a master architect in charge of building the cathedral at Rheims. Readers learn about stone carving, quarrying, construction techniques, and stained glass. Colorful drawings enliven every page, but the technique of following one particular character seems artificial in such a brief book. Strangely enough, the five-entry list of further reading does not cite David Macaulay's Cathedral (Houghton, 1973), which is an outstanding treatment of the subject. --David N.
