5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation June 15, 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is probably one of the best compilations of early choral music I have heard, let alone own. A fantastic selection of works, including some modal pieces by composers such as Samuel Barber with his famous "Agnus Dei", creates a very nice variety of complexity. The overall tone of both CDs is very peaceful yet uplifting, and the performers are highly talented and spirited. This is a wonderful and unsurpassed addition to my collection. A must for any lover of early choral works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth owning September 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This 2 CD set is a compilation of previously released recordings of some of the world's most outstanding a cappella choral music. The best qualities of this release are the judicious selection of the repertoire which spans from Medieval organum, Renaissance polyphony, (not really any 18th or 19th century repertoire) to several 20th century masters including Part, Gorecki, Durufle, Messiaen, Villette, Tavener, Catoire and others. The ensembles include fine Men and boys choirs from England, Women's choirs, Mixed choirs singing in the Orthodox tradition, and Medieval choirs. All of the performances are excellent. The only instruments are bells included as an effect in the first track. The historical styles and ensembles are mixed throughout the track list so that the CD has variety in the playlist when played straight through. This CD is a fine introduction to the a cappella choral music of Villette, Part, Gorecki, Rachmaninoff, Durufle and Catoire. The weakest aspects of this CD are that the tracks have virtually no silence between them. This may assist its use as a background CD but it robs the tracks of the compositional closure at the end of these works. Also, some multi movement works such as the Catoire Requiem are not presented in succession as you might hear in the original performance. Rather individual movements are scattered throughout the play list. Overall, this compilation is a very affordable way to have recordings of several Medieval and 20th Century a cappella choral gems. The overall "mood" of the CD is soothing so if you wish for excitement and bombast, this would not be the CD for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning December 14, 2013
By Alan
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I initially bought this for just a couple of tracks but I am so pleased it, it's a wonderful collection of choral music throughout the years. If you enjoy choral music and lets be honest you wouldn't be reading this if you didn't and have the opportunity to buy it, do!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of vocal music August 18, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This 2-CD set contains 40 well-selected vocal pieces spanning many centuries. The selections are fresh, vibrant, uplifting, and well-recorded. A great place to start exploring this genre of music and a welcome addition to any library. Several favorites here, but Barber's Agnes Die (a vocal version of his well-known Adagio for Strings) alone is worth the price of this disc. Likewise, Durufle's Ubi Caritas invites one to close their eyes and be transported to another place... And that's just the first few cuts!

I could go on, but just get this set and enjoy the wonderful music on it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uneventful August 1, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As one who likes to listen to quiet music (such as Miserere by Allegri and the 'Music for Compline' CD) while reading or doing computer work, this CD seemed appealing. This CD has tested my tolerance for boring and it set a threshold that I cannot tolerate.
