A must-have for fans of southern gospel music!,

This review is from: Cathedrals: The Best of the Cathedrals (DVD)
For years, the Cathedral Quartet defined the genre of the male quartet in southern gospel music. This compilation of music spans several decades and various incarnations of the Cathedrals. With humor and poignant reflection, Bill Gaither and George Younce lend insight to several songs that made listening to the Cathedrals' music a joy. At the heart of the group was the relationship of George and late lead singer Glen Payne. The love these men had for each other coupled with their desire to glorify God through their music really comes through on this DVD. It would be a welcome addition to the collection of any gospel music fan.

The best of the best. The Cathedrals really believed what they sang of and it is so enjoyable. Wish we still had more singers like this with us today.

The DVD Best of Series features The Cathedrals, with George Younce, but unfortunately, you will not hear from the remaining Cathedrals, but Glen Payne's family does make their presence. They and Gaither speak about the love Payne had for his family. Glen Payne was born Oct. 20, 1926 and died Oct. 15, 1999.One thing a viewer can get from the Cathedrals performances is the bond the two had, George and Glen having fun, joking, and especially the enjoyment they had when singing. Gaither speaks about the "frick and frack" act that he said was genuine joy. Many members of the Cathedrals have changed, but these two have been together for 30 years. The musical numbers include: This Old House/Saints Go Marching On; Tryin' To Get a Glimpse; Life Will Be Sweeter; Climbing Higher and Higher; Old Convention Song; Boundless Love; Roll Away Troubled River; Give the World a Smile; My Lord Will Send a Moses; A New Born Feeling; Haven of Rest; A Prodigal Son; Laughing Sog; Heavenly Parade; Movin' Up to Gloryland; Mexico; Beyond Sunset; O What A Savior; Cleanse Me; Thanks to Calvary; New Life/Everybody Will Be Happy. There is a lot of music here, and plenty of stories. Many clips are from the The Cathedrals: A Farewell Celebration George Younce was born on Feb. 1930 and died Apr, 2005 This is special! .......Rizzo

When someone buys a musical DVD, one expects music. This DVD is typical Gaither -- plenty of talk which becomes tiresome on subsequent replays. This DVD focuses on George Younce -- almost to the exclusion of others. The Gaither production is choppy with one-second focuses on the performers interspersed with many focuses on his typical crowd of non-performing friends. The background is cluttered making it difficult to concentrate on the performers. This all being said, I do really like to hear George Younce sing. It's a shame Gaither inserts himself in conversations with Younce for much of the DVD. I like Gaither, too, but enough is enough.
