5.0 out of 5 stars What a Football Book
Just completed this wonderful book about the traditions that make college football such a great experence for players, fans, students and the universities they represent. The interesting stories, facts and information contained in Cathedrals make it a very exciting read.

Additionaly it's an excellent reference book, that you will refer back to time and again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly written
The authors are obviously breathlessly enthusiatic about the subject but as writers they flat-out stink: the book feels as if it's aimed at a nine-year old. It amounts to a capsule description of a number of successful football programs, accounts that are woefully thin in both anecdote and insight. Any attempt at humor is ham-fisted and strained. More unfortunate...

I've been a Texas A&M fan for a long time so I was very happy to see A&M in the book. After reading about the other schools, I came away with a greater appreciation for college football and what it means to fans around the country. It's a great game and CATHEDRALS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL is a great book.

So much gets written about the big schools and their successes on the field. This is the first book that I've seen that takes a look at a lot of the schools that don't get the gushing press accolades and the constant fawning over by other media. And it's also cleanly written with a focus on the positives of college football. It's so easy today to get jaded because of the big money and the behavior of some of football's so called 'stars'. But the real stars of college football are the fans and their support of their team. These guys get get it!

If your blood thickens in the fall due to the smell of the pigskin in the air and you pay homage during the fall Saturday gatherings, then you'll agree Cathedrals is appropriately named. Nothing captures the spirit, the tradition, and the magic that surrounds college football quite like it!

CATHEDRALS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL is a fascinating look at college football tradition. There are plenty of books out there about certain teams or coaches, but this is the only one that really covers what makes college football so compelling. Whether your school is in it or not, you'll enjoy this alot. I certainly did.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like college football....., November 22, 1999

This review is from: Cathedrals Of College Football (Hardcover)
College football is emotional, loud, spirited, passionate, rewarding and a lot of fun. CATHEDRALS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL captured it all. Reading it made me want to go to games at some of these places I'd never been before. The book is a lot of fun. Get it before the bowl games start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read about an American institution., January 13, 2000

Too many books are written about what's wrong with sports. This one is an engaging look at what's right with college football. The book looks at the characters like Bear Bryant, Frank Howard, and Woody Hayes...but it shines an interesting light on college football fans: traditions, antics, and why they are so captivated by the game. While this isn't great literature (no sports books are), it is certainly great fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars New look at the greatest sport, January 15, 2000

I recieved this book as a Christmas gift and found it "can not put it down" book. A real different look at college football, one of the more positive approaches that I've seen. Recommend it to anyone who loves the sport.

The stories about each school are fun and the presentation of facts make it a handy reference.

More unfortunate is the decision to end each chapter with "That's why this stadium is a Cathedral of College Football." Once or twice, ok. But every chapter? The idea for the book is a good one but the authors lack the talent to carry though on it, a shortcoming that is evident on every page. They should have left the writing of sports to professionals.

This book is ok for someone who would like to know about various college and university football programs and their stadiums. I got to learn about the backgrounds of the schools included but noticed some errors about West Virginia University and Mountaineer Field. You wish the authors had either visited each stadium to see a game or got their research right. All in all it is a decent book.
