Product Description

Catherine is an unprecedented exploration of the pleasures and horrors of love. As Vincent, a man recently succumbed to the irresistible beauty of the game's titular diversion players find themselves swept into a treacherous love triangle. Catherine's core themes-those of free will, of the delicate nature of relationships and the choices we make within them, marry perfectly with the intense, terror-filled gameplay that serves to accurately reflect Vincent's growing sense of anxiety. It is an experience wholly unlike any to come before it. Vincent likes his girlfriend. Katherine is pretty, smart, and successful. Trouble is, she's starting to talk about long-term commitment, which is something Vincent's spent his entire life avoiding. With new complications the furthest thing from his mind, Vincent heads out for his regular night of drinks with his friends. Little does he know that he's about to be blindsided by a beautiful, seductive, irresistible freight train named Catherine. Suddenly, he's hung over in bed next to the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, unsure about the previous night's events. Was it just making out, he wonders, or did something more serious happen between them? Should he tell Katherine? Will he ever see Catherine again? Vincent's about to find that a stumble on the staircase of love can turn into a horrific, fatal plummet.

From the Manufacturer

Players will enter the life of Vincent Brooks, a 32-year-old man who finds himself caught by the irresistible attraction of the game's titular diversion. Vincent wakes up, hungover, next to a stunningly beautiful woman who isn't his girlfriend. This lands him in a predicament that occupies most men's dreams and nightmares. Did anything happen?  Does he tell his longtime girlfriend, who's pressuring him to commit to her? Can he get away with stringing both women along?  What will you choose to have Vincent do?  Who will you choose to hurt?  In life, cheating can ruin everything, but in the world of Catherine, it can also kill you.

Overview
Vincent really likes his girlfriend. Katherine's pretty, smart, and successful. Trouble is, now she's sat Vincent down for "the talk," and Vincent's spent his entire life trying to avoid long-term commitment.  Since romantic complications are the last thing he wants to deal with, Vincent meets his friends for their regular night of drinks.  Little does he know that he's about to be blindsided by a drop-dead sexy freight train named Catherine.  When the morning comes, he's hungover in bed next to the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, unable to recall the previous night's events.  Was it just harmless fooling around, he wonders, or did something more serious happen between them?  Should he tell Katherine?  Will he ever see Catherine again?  Vincent's about to discover that stumbling on the stairway of love can turn into a horrific, fatal plummet...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great puzzle game with a great story September 2, 2011
By Jim777
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3| Edition:Alternate Boxart|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
When I first heard about Catherine i thought it was just a really really weird Japanese game with some sexy boxart. And I wasn't far off, but as time went on many gaming sites started talking about the game and showing that it was more then just a blond bombshell with some boobs. Catherine turned out to be one of the single most interesting and different games I have played this year, if not this decade.

Catherine is very hard to sum up, and its going to sound really weird. And it is, but trust me for its weirdness Catherine is not to be missed.

Story
The game revolves around a guy named Vincent, he's 32 and has a girlfriend named Kathrine (with a K). He likes life the way it is, just coasting along. However Katherine wants to get married and start a new life with Vincent. Soon after Vincent starts having terrible nightmares, and cant get much sleep. Not long after all of this starts Vincent wakes up next to Catherine (with a C) a smoking hot blond girl. He cant remember what happened but he knows hes in deep trouble.

That is the plot of Catherine (the game), its adult, deep, engaging, and fun to watch. You will be invested in many characters and their problems and it's your choice of how to handle them.

The story is also very good, there are many times where my jaw dropped and I didn't pick up for a good ten minutes.

Gameplay
Catherine has 2 main game play types, when Vincent is in the bar and when he is in his dreams. The nightmares make up the core game play, with Vincent having to puzzle platform his way up towers of blocks while said tower crumbles beneath him. The mechanics are deep and fun and you always feel a sigh of relief when you make it to safety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations May 1, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3| Edition:Alternate Boxart|Verified Purchase
Being a girl considering purchasing this game, I was a little hesitant, but it has been far more than worth it. It is lots of fun (and occasionally frustrating) with just the right level of challenging.
- Amusing cutscenes
- Your choices in the game affect the story progression and character development
- bonus trivia and quotes
- Game difficulty gradually increases and new obstacles are added at well placed intervals
- you can play over and over and have a different game

I would recommend it if you are a fan of anime, drama, and puzzles (and even if you aren't, consider trying it anyway!)

4.0 out of 5 stars different game but love it! September 7, 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought it for my boyfriend, but I LOVE the storyline. It is very good and puzzling to figure out the building blocks. But I like how you can choose certain options like to answer phone calls, respond to texts, and what choices you can make in Vincent's life. This game is really fun and sort of like a movie. Not much "action" or game play but it really gets you thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting game concept that is worth playing. November 2, 2014

This is a fairly good game. Time spent outside of the Dream World is the character development part and time in the dream world is the action/puzzle part. The climbing of the towers can be frustrating at times and very difficult. Would be interesting to replay game making the opposite choices than was made first time trough the game just see what the different outcome would be. However, don't think I want to go through the climbing of the towers again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised I liked it. April 17, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3| Edition:Alternate Boxart|Verified Purchase
I usually hate the story in video games. I play to kill things. I always skip the dialog, I want meat - not story.

This game flipped that on it's head. I rushed through the action/game so I could get back to the story.

If anything the puzzle/climbing aspect could have been removed and the story/dialog choices expanded on and I would have enjoyed this game even more.

This game is undeniably Japanese. Catherine is created by Atlus who brought us the awesome Persona games. In Persona, your characters spent half the game battling monsters at night and the other half trapped in a high school anime. In Catherine, your character spends his nights eluding monsters and solving sliding block puzzles, while spending the rest of his time at a bar.

The game was challenging but not as impossibly difficult as some reviewers would lead you to believe. The game is seemingly all about choice, but I will say that the choices you are presented with and the "correct" answers to those questions are a bit odd. For example, you essentially have to choose between a frumpy and controlling "Katherine" or a free-spirited albeit obviously crazy "Catherine." I suppose "Katherine" is suppose to represent maturity and "Catherine" is youthful freedom, but the way each character is presented through the game neither option is a particularly desirable one. Additionally, throughout the game you are asked multiple questions and each answer weighs in favor of either "order" or "chaos." However, it is often difficult to tell why one answer would weigh in one direction or another. For example, here are some of the questions presented:

Which is a better life?
Long and dull (law answer)
Short and full (chaos answer)

Would you rather watch baseball or golf at home?
Golf (chaos answer)
Baseball (law answer)

You can't accept the rising costs of goods, can you?
I hate politics (law answer)
I hate economics (chaos answer)

Which looks better on men?
