an indie-pop gem,

Biirdie's newest album, Catherine Avenue is a noted look at analog music within indie pop and Americana. The trio of Jared Flamm, Kala Savage, and Richard Gowen come together solidly on this album. The double threat of Kala Savage's angelic vocals and Jared Flamm's world-worn pipes really put Biirdie in a class of their own. With Kala's vocals, it is easy to hear a strong resemblance to Rilo Kiley or Grandaddy. Haramonies are quite abundant on this richly melodic indie-pop gem.The innocence of the album is balanced wonderfully with a subtle complex sound. Birdie pulls out a load of different instruments, which add a grand experimental quality to the album. But this never overpowers the simple singer/song writer quality. It's quite a blend of experiences. These two different ideas about music, complexity and simplicity, come together to create a unique offering in "Catherine Avenue". It's clean and crisp, but at the same time it reaches out and grasps at ideas on the precipice of accepted instrumentation. This jovial experimentation turns the album into something quite worthwhile. It's an adventure, and a good one at that. Recommended tracks: "L.A. Is Mars" and "Who Were You Thinking Of"

Different But Still Amazing!,

I popped this cd into my computer and expected the now conforming same sounding music many bands these days have ,but to my surprise this group managed to make a great cd composed of slower more relaxing different sounding music. A great cd for anybody who wants a change of pace in their music collection but still wants good music.

Saw Biirdie open for Robben Ford, which seems a little odd, in retrospect. Good band, good sounds. I hope they find a bigger audience, because they deserve it. A fun record, and a fun show, both recommended.
