From the Manufacturer

Players will enter the life of Vincent Brooks, a 32-year-old man who finds himself caught by the irresistible attraction of the game's titular diversion. Vincent wakes up, hungover, next to a stunningly beautiful woman who isn't his girlfriend. This lands him in a predicament that occupies most men's dreams and nightmares. Did anything happen?  Does he tell his longtime girlfriend, who's pressuring him to commit to her? Can he get away with stringing both women along?  What will you choose to have Vincent do?  Who will you choose to hurt?  In life, cheating can ruin everything, but in the world of Catherine, it can also kill you.

Overview
Vincent really likes his girlfriend. Katherine's pretty, smart, and successful. Trouble is, now she's sat Vincent down for "the talk," and Vincent's spent his entire life trying to avoid long-term commitment.  Since romantic complications are the last thing he wants to deal with, Vincent meets his friends for their regular night of drinks.  Little does he know that he's about to be blindsided by a drop-dead sexy freight train named Catherine.  When the morning comes, he's hungover in bed next to the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, unable to recall the previous night's events.  Was it just harmless fooling around, he wonders, or did something more serious happen between them?  Should he tell Katherine?  Will he ever see Catherine again?  Vincent's about to discover that stumbling on the stairway of love can turn into a horrific, fatal plummet...

Vincent, not quite sure about commitment.

Game Features

  • The Horrors of Love—Vincent's waking fears, doubts, pressures, and growing guilt about commitment and fidelity now gleefully follow him into his dreams, manifesting as horribly disfigured monsters and a ticking clock.
  • Between a Rock and a Soft Place—The player must navigate Vincent through heavy moral decisions. As in real life, hardly anything is black and white. What is the value of honesty? What is the right thing to do? Either way, someone's going to get hurt. Worse yet, someone could die.
  • The Nightmare of Your Dreams—Under the watch of producer Katsura Hashino, acclaimed director of Persona 3 and Persona 4, famed character artist Shigenori Soejima and master composer Shoji Meguro create sights and sounds unlike anything else. As unforgettable and original as the game's narrative, Catherine's visual direction and musical score define and perfectly complement Vincent's terrifying ascent into the dizzying perils of love.
  • Escape With or From a Friend—Local competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, in addition to leaderboards, ensure that the many thrills and horrors of racing through twisted stages can be enjoyed by more than one player and add hours of extra gameplay to the overall experience.

There will be trouble with fiancee Katherine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but Unneccessary, July 30, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Catherine "Love Is Over" Deluxe Edition, PlayStation 3 (Video Game)
I like to get special editions of video games to see if they're worth the extra money, and the Catherine "Love is Over" Deluxe Edition is BARELY worth the extra $20. Since CDs and novelty t-shirts generally run around $10 each, you would technically break even, but the contents of the Deluxe Edition are really unnecessary.

Pizza box: That's exactly what it is. A pizza box with a cheap sticker slapped on the front. Personal sized pizza(possibly deep dish), to be exact. The cardboard is as cheap as any disposable pizza box you'd get from a major pizza chain.

Vincent's Boxers: I can't compare the quality of the Vincent's boxers to other boxers because I don't normally wear boxers, but the material is relatively thin and a 65/35 blend of polyester and cotton. Men's size L.

"Empty" t-shirt: The material is kind of thin, but it wouldn't be bad for everyday use, especially on some of the warmer days. The shirt is 100% cotton and from Gildan, a fairly reputable company that makes blank shirts for custom printing. Men's size L.

Pillowcase: Clearly made for display purposes, but try explaining something like this to your mom/wife/girlfriend. It'll certainly raise their eyebrows, but I suppose it's at least pretty PG/PG-13 rated. Pretty standard and about as well made as any generic pillowcase. 55/35 blend of cotton and polyester. Twin/Std sized.

"Artbook": When I heard that this was only 36 pages, I immediately dismissed it. An CE artbook should be no shorter than 50 pages, and a REAL artbook is over 150 pages. It's more like an extended manual with character bios and a quick insight into Shoji Meguro's motives for remixing the classical pieces that he did. You can expect to see a lot of the same images that are already floating around the internet. And for some reason, it's written in English and French. The real 160 page artbook is being released by Atlus in August.

Sound Disc: Please not that this is a sound DISC. And NOT a soundTRACK. It even says on the artbook that it's a "sound disc". That said, it's an amazing piece of work. Shoji Meguro has taken some of the greatest pieces in classical music and remixed them to fit the frantic atmosphere of Vincent's nightmare sequences.

Tracklist
1. Holst - Planet's Suite (Mars + Jupiter)
2. Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 in C Minor (3rd Movement "Fate")
3. Bach - Fugue in G Minor (The Little)
4. Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 in E Minor "From the New World" (1st and 3rd Movements)
5. Rossini - William Tell Overture Part 2 "The Storm" and Part 3 "The Ranz des Vaches"
6. Borodin - Polovtsian Dances
7. Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition "The Hut on Fowl's Legs (Baba-Yaga)"
8. Bizet L'Arlesienne Second Suite "Farandole"
9. Chopin - "Revolutionary Etude"
10. Handel - Messiah "Hallelujah Chorus"
11. Chopin - Piano Sonata No. 2 "Funeral March" (3rd Movement)

"Catherine" Game: It's nothing short of amazing. The sim and puzzle genres are an unlikely mix, but Atlus really pulls it off. The sim part comes into play when Vincent's at the bar with his friends. He mingles with other patrons, answers texts, plays an arcade game called Rapunzel, and drinks (of course). The puzzle part is from his nightmares: he must pull, push, and climb towers of blocks while avoiding traps, other sheep who will try to sabotage him, and/or ridiculously creepy bosses that chase him up the towers. You know that saying that goes "easy to learn, difficult to master"? Well the opposite is true for Catherine. It's difficult to learn, but once you've learned all the techniques and can see pathways, it's easy to master.

3.0 out of 5 stars My love is over with this "Love is Over" deluxe edition., July 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Catherine "Love Is Over" Deluxe Edition, PlayStation 3 (Video Game)
This is a review for the Love Is Over edition of the game, not the actual game itself which is great. The Stray Sheep "pizza box" this comes in is nothing more than an ordinary cardboard box that you might get with a computer component with a sticker slapped on it. The pair of boxers are some sort of cheap fabric. The artbook doesn't really have that much art in it and is more of a "behind the art" book. It also has one picture of some of the main characters and a little blurb about them before going completely into the art and style of Catherine and only Catherine. No environment art at all. No extra art or explanations for the other characters in the game. Although I'm not really surprised that the pillowcase had only Catherine on it, it would have made sense to have Katherine on the other side. The soundtrack is ok even though it doesn't have all the tracks from the game on it and the T shirt is good quality. I like the overall premise of this deluxe edition, but it wasn't as "lovely" as I had hoped.
