David Duff and Catherine Jones, eds., Scotland, Ireland, and the Romantic Aesthetic.

(Bucknell University Press, 2007) 294 US$60.00

Scotland, Ireland, and the Romantic Aesthetic is an important contribution to the re-consideration of Romantic-era literature in the light of J.G.A. Pocock's famous "Plea," an argument for an historiographic model that stresses heterogeneity within the British Isles as an "Atlantic Archipelago" and important in Early Modern studies for decades. The archipelagic model offers a way of resisting both metropole-periphery formulations and the presumption of progress to wards unification and assimilation, and instead fosters the comparative approach proposed in the Introduction and explored in the collection.
