Book Description

June 1984 A Miss Silver Mystery
The Catherine-Wheel had once been a home for pirates and smugglers, but now is looked like it was harbouring a murderer. There was a certain heavy air of intrigue and mystery emanating from the old inn high on the cliff top. The Catherine-Wheel had once been a home for pirates and smugglers, but now is looked like it was harbouring a murderer. It had begun with an advertisement in the paper requesting descendants of the late innkeeper, Jeremiah Taverner, to stay for a weekend at the inn. They had arrived, a mixed assortment, to the family reunion eager to discover the secrets of their ancestry. But one of them had been hideously murdered, bringing the inn's stormy past into frightening focus.Scotland Yard, already suspicious of dope smuggling in the area, sends Maud Silver to investigate before the fireworks start to fly.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'You can't go wrong with Maud Silver' -- Observer 'Miss Wentworth is a first-rate storyteller' -- Daily Telegraph 'Miss Silver is marvellous' -- Daily Mail 'I like Wentworth very much - she captures the mores of pre-war middle class England perfectly, and she writes rather better than Christie. They are romantic cosies, of course, but with an edge to them and an intelligence to the writing that has lasted.' -- Andrew Taylor 'I always thought them rather better than 'Miss Marple' and certainly very well written.' -- Mary Stewart 'Miss Silver has her place in detective fiction as surely as Lord Peter Wimsey or Hercule Poirot' -- Manchester Evening News '... some of the best examples of the British country-house murder mystery' -- Alfred Hitchcock Magazine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smugglers and Secret Passages!, January 6, 2005
This is an enjoyable Miss Silver Mystery. As usual we have Ms. Wentworth's motley crew of characters that she depicts so well. We have the remarkable Miss Silver who has been asked by Chief Inspector Lamb to pay a visit to an old inn called the Chatherine-Wheel. The police have been watching this inn for a long time because of rumours of smuggling, jewel theft and drug trafficking. It's not long after Miss Silver gets there that a murder occurs, and Miss Silver and Frank Abbott are in a race against time to prevent more killings. There is nothing that the crooks that use the old inn for their illegal activities will stop at to keep their secrets safe. The pace in the book is more urgent than usual in a Miss Silver mystery, and the story is exciting. I enjoyed this book. And of course, there are Ms. Wentworth's wonderful characterizations to help it along. She makes her characters so realistic and none more so than in this book.

This review is from: The Catherine-Wheel (A Miss Silver Mystery) (Hardcover)
Not as well put together as some Miss Silver mysteries, this one still has our friend with the fast knitting needles and the steel-trap mind, this time in a spooky old posting-house. Secret passages, smugglers, and of course, Young Love (in duplicate) make for an enjoyable read, even if there's a plot problem here or there.
