This one was headed for that pile, but sorry about your luck...I opened it.
And was astonished.
Possibly even looking forward to using it. (This is saying something, people.)
It's a full-color booklet, with a page for each day of Advent. The introduction promises, "This little book will help put Advent in a better Catholic perspective" and I would heartily agree.
Each day has a scripture verse and a short reflection. Then there's a "Talk Together" question, a prayer, and...and these are actually pretty cool...an activity.
A beautiful and awesome resource for Advent. I'm hoping there's one for Lent, too!
The book is formatted in two-page spreads, one for every day from the first Sunday of Advent through Christmas. Each spread features a passage from scripture, reflection, discussion question, prayer, and activity. Colorful graphics symbolize modern and traditional practices. Even the youngest children can listen, pray along, and work on the activities with some help from parents. Those in upper elementary school and beyond will be able to participate more fully.
Activities over the 29 days are geared to all levels of ability and interest. At home, the family can spend an evening by candlelight, prepare and serve a family dinner honoring its own holiday traditions, create ornaments and cards, and choose secret "buddies" to honor in various ways. Samples of ideas for reaching out include donating or raising funds for a charitable organization and bringing comfort to persons in need. The ideas here are sure to generate "spin-offs" that will become family traditions for future generations.
The content is just "okay". It definitely provided some additional prayers, thought, and activities to our current advent practices. My child is younger and some of the thought and activities are a little more advanced than I had hoped for complete family involvement (i found that it was just my husband and me participating most of the time). It may be better in a few years to fully engage our family.
