I can't help but like a book providing clear, practical guidance toward building virtues, not only within our own souls, but within our loved ones' souls too. Lest the "bootcamp" terminology shiver the timbers of any potential readers, rest assured you'll find this book far more "gainful" than painful. The author has laid out a very reasonable, doable, 30-day plan to draw your family closer together, closer to God, and closer to what God would have us to be, by focusing on the development of the theological and cardinal virtues. Each day has a theme, a Scriptural verse, a virtue of focus, a prayer, and practical suggestions and exercises throughout that families can do together. Mary Lou Roisen provides great advice gleaned from medical, psychological, and educational experts and also provides heartfelt lessons from her own life as a wife and mother. And the bootcamp terminology is actually quite fitting. Today's family is definitely under siege from omnipresent media messages encouraging rampant relativism and selfish strivings for pleasure at the expense of things like faith, hope, love, prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude. So arm yourself and your family for the battle with good books like this one. Got boots? Lace `em up. Got a family? Get this book.

"Catholic Family Boot Camp," by Mary Lou Rosien, is a unique new devotional for Catholic families looking to increase their faithfulness to God and to grow closer to one another. This 30-day devotional is funny, poignant, and refreshingly honest.

Mary Lou Roisien uses the seven Theological and Cardinal Virtues of the Catholic Church as a foundation for the devotional - hope, love, justice, prudence, temperance, fortitude, and faith. Each day in the devotional focuses on one of these seven virtues, and is meant to help each family member strengthen him- or herself in that virtue. Each day also has a task for the each member of the family to complete. Mary Lou Rosien sets tough but realistic goals for each family member. One example of a goal that she sets is to plan a family retreat day. Another is to make a list of things that you are grateful for, and to share that list with your whole family. Each day also comes with a prayer and a relevant Scriptural passage.

This is the perfect book for families seeking to grow closer to one another and to God. By following each day's task, all families will inevitably learn new things, laugh a great deal, and be inspired to love more deeply.

As the mother of seven children (and a foster child), Mary Lou Rosien is realistic, yet inspiring, refreshingly honest, and funny.

A must for all Catholic families!

Are you looking for a book which will help your family increase in virtue? Catholic Family Boot Camp is an ideal resource for assisting your family not only in reinforcing the spiritual virtues, but also in strengthening emotional bonds with your closest family members.

"I have only one goal in providing you with this devotional book: to help your families increase in virtue," says author Mary Lou Rosien at the beginning of this terrific new book, Catholic Family Boot Camp, a 30-day devotional workout for families. The boot camp, in this case, is a training camp in the virtues: hope, love, justice, temperance, fortitude, prudence, faith.

The author shares with readers that her son is in the military and that when he went to boot camp, he came back physically and mentally stronger and prepared to fight the enemy.

So too are American families "fighting an enemy. It is a strong, fierce enemy that attacks us through the media, in our schools on the playgrounds, and even sometimes in areas of worship. It seeks to destroy families."

This wonderful book is filled with Scripture, Catechism and saint's quotes, true stories, activities and refreshingly honest admissions from the author that even as adults, parents have areas which need improvement.

The best thing about this book is that all the work has been done for's easy to follow and very user-friendly.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book are: "Observation is the biggest part of learning," "When you love someone you become an expert in them," "When someone acts unlovable, that is when they need love the most."

I love this book and I highly recommend this wonderful, easy-to-follow resource to everyone who wishes to increase in virtue and grow in holiness.
