As an admitted Friday fanatic, I was thrilled to find out that after 16 long years another solo album was going to be released by this amazing artist. Thankfully, I was not disappointed once I heard "Catholic." There are many beautiful ballads on this album ("A Song that Hurts" is a particularly emotional and "Lord I'm Coming" is breathtaking). There are also some songs that make a woman want to put on a naughtly LBD and hit the town - "Perfume" in particular!

Not quite what I was expecting but turns out to be one of my new faves. This guy sounds like Bono. The music is cool and haunting. Love this cd. package arrived in perfect condition from seller.

I loved Virgin Prunes when they were good but found their output inconsistent overall, as I do with Gavin Friday's later works. His second solo album, Adam 'n' Eve, is far and away my favourite Friday album. The others have their moments but that one is great from start to finish, as well as containing my favourite Friday songs. catholic (meant to be small "c", apparently) is also quite consistent but not at the same level as Adam 'n' Eve. For me though, it is better than Shag Tobacco or Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves. It is mostly quite mellow and he makes use of an almost falsetto vocal on several tracks, with lower registers layered beneath. The overall effect is haunting and beautiful at times, slightly menacing at others.

If you are an old fan wondering if this is worthwhile, I think it most definitely is. If you are a newcomer looking for a good album that is a little bit different, you could do a lot worse than this but I would recommend starting with Adam 'n' Eve.

it might sound something like this. And, no coincidence the two have been longtime friends. The music here is contemporary electronic-tinged pop, finely constructed. Friday's voice sounds rather like a strung-out Bono - ie, more mellow. He uses a similar falsetto occasionally, too.

If this description at all intrigues, definitely check this out. I've only just listened to it, so it may well grow on me even more.

If you're already familiar with Friday's work, this will probably please you. It fits right in with his previous works, especially Shag Tobacco.

Lyrically, as one can easily guess from the title, much of it is religious-themed. The only real knock is that Friday sinks into over-repetition a couple times, most notably on The Sun & The Moon & The Stars, which overuses that phrase. Also, epilogue, which just repeats "the best is yet to come" over and over for 3 minutes.
