A very scholarly and balanced work. Solid assesment of the state of music in the Catholic Church, with great suggestions for making music an intrinsic part of the Liturgy, not a distraction from it. In my opinion, there is no greater expert in America on Liturgical Music, especially as applies to the Holy Mass. Every Priest, Bishop, Seminarian, and Music Minister in the world who can read English should have this book.
Dr. Schaefer does a wonderful job of making a scholarly "textbook" very readable. There are great recorded examples available on a website (referred to at appropriate places in the book).
It is obvious that this is a labor of love, and this love of the Church and its Liturgy shines through. This is a must read that is decades overdue.

This book was used in a college level course however it is also good book for those just interested in religious music. The author gives a complete review of music of the Catholic church and how the forces that exist in society have helped shape the guidelines of the Church. The author's companion website provides outstanding examples that demonstrate the various types of music that have shaped the Church and provides tasking that further the student's knowledge.

As a survey of sacred music, it is quite promising. The listening samples are excellent. While Edward Schaefer is clearly an excellent musician, the book has need of editing in the areas of philosophy and theology regarding music. Nonetheless, it is an invaluable resource for the time being when nothing else exists on the subject.
