5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference on 2000 years of Catholocism.
I received this a few days back and have not been able to put it down. It has answers to questions you didn't even know you had. A clear, concise "almanac" of everything about the Life of Christ, the Bible, and the Catholic Church- the church that Christ founded.

This NEEDS to be on your shelf right next your Bible, Catechism, and Crusifix.

May God bless...

3.0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more
While its coverage is encyclopedic...the descriptions that go along with the multitude of entries are sparse and lean on information.

The idea behind the book is brilliant. I sincerely hope that in future editions the authors will choose to put more meat on at least some of the more mainstream subjects covered here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic Catholic Information and More, July 2, 1999

What a fabulous resource! So much in a single book of 500 pages. The anecdotes throughout provide a human touch to the information. The index provides fast access to the book's contents. Wonderfully laid out and really easy to use. I'm ordering one for all the teachers in the religion department.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great starting place, August 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Catholic Source Book: A Comprehensive Collection of Information about the Catholic Church (Paperback)
This source book contains brief entries on thousands of topics on Catholic history, traditions, etc. You won't find detailed information - but that's not the purpose of the book. It's meant to provide quick facts. I use this as a starting place - this gives me enough information to carry on with a more extensive search elsewhere, if I want to know more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Catholic Education Programs, April 2, 2006
This review is from: The Catholic Source Book: A Comprehensive Collection of Information about the Catholic Church (Paperback)
Even though I'm just 29, I've been in Catholic Education Programs involving Junior High and High School Students for over 15 years now, and when I first read this book, I made it one of the required readings for at least all of the catechists that I have since instructed, especially those that, over the years, have not had adequate religious instruction over the years. These are the ones that complain about reading the bible, left wondering what the point of it is, and in some cases not knowing what the Catechism is. But this book uses larger fonts, pictures, figures, and various facts about church history and saints that make Catholicism so real and interesting. And being a visual person, I love the figures explaining the Reformation, differences we have with the Protestant faith, and the sadness that came from this considering the movement originated from a sorrowful story about difficulties in politics, sinfulness, and poor practices at the time, much as the American Catholic Church has been experiencing in the past decade. But this also explains how the foundations of our faith are what we need to remember and that sinners of our faith should not deter us from the "one holy, catholic and apostolic Church" (Nicene Creed) we declare we believe in.

It's hard to summarize the elements of the Catholic faith in this book, but for the catechists that I instruct , making sure that they are responsible in understanding the faith that they are to state they believe in upon receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, I make them read every topic we cover in our instruction, knowing that there is a chapter or section that covers this in "The Catholic Source Book." I also recommend "The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth," by Brian Singer-Towns, et al.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every Catholic home library, November 2, 2005
By
This review is from: The Catholic Source Book: A Comprehensive Collection of Information about the Catholic Church (Paperback)
Make some room next to your treasured family Bible and Catechism. This reference work is a great tool for your Catholic studies. I especially like the tibits of information on the Church, Traditions, Catholic Symbols, and the Liturgical Year. Its a great refresher for cradle Catholics, and a great starting point for those new to the Church. The book is relatively easy to use. I recommend it for middle school students and older.

The information contained in this book answers questions concerning the Catholic faith. It dispells myths and misconceptions.

It is a great book for teenagers who are challenged in their faith. I use it as reference material when teaching RCIA.
