Cute, accurate, friendly, but limited,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Catholic Wedding Book (Paperback)
The Catholic Wedding Book is a nice break from books that thunder about how "the wedding is just one day." It also includes everything you need to know to plan your One Day in the Catholic Church -- if you're a young couple having a typical wedding hosted by your parents. Older and more established couples may chuckle at the early chapters but will have to wait for the ceremony chapter to find useful information. The checklists and sample forms in the appendices are excellent.

This book answers every possible question you might have.,

This was a handy reference book that was humorously written to take the guesswork out of planning a wedding. Even "cradle Catholics" need some guidelines, and this is the book for anyone who wants a Catholic wedding. It includes variations for all needs and wishes.

OK if you are American,

This book intends to be a complete guide to organising your wedding in a Catholic church. The selection of possible readings, and some of the ideas on how to organise the ceremony are fine. However if you are getting married in Britain (as opposed to America, where the book was written) you have very little leeway about the vows as they are covered by Act of Parliament. The "light-hearted", jokey style gets a bit irratating after a while too. From personal experience of organising my own wedding in a Catholic church this year, I'd forget the book and talk to your priest instead.

Of all the books out there on Catholic weddings, this is probably the best all around guide. It includes substantial information on how to plan your wedding cerimony and Nuptual liturgy.

Too Old-School to be Helpful,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Catholic Wedding Book (Paperback)
The first copyright for this book is 1953 and I doubt if its ever been updated. There might be helpful information within this book but it is so old-fashioned, cutesy and bordering on condescending that I couldn't mine anything useful from it. If you're looking for guidance stick with your pastor and other friends who have already married in the Catholic Church. I agree with the reviewer who said "This book is an embarrasment to Catholics".

This book was an embarassment to Catholics.,

This review is from: The Catholic Wedding Book (Paperback)
This book is inappropriate for anyone in a serious search to bring Catholicism into their wedding celebration. It also is offensive to modern Catholics, who would not consider asking for a dispensation of marriage from the Bishop if the other party is Christian, but not Catholic.Offering loosely translated biblical text, such as "gee you look nice", and advice on "frequently asked questions" such as "Is it a good idea to chew gum during the wedding?," I was embarrased for all Catholics reading this text. Buy it only for humorous value.

Helpful, but woefully imcomplete,

This review is from: The Catholic Wedding Book (Paperback)
Though there were helpful parts, like the choices of readings and music, no where mentioned in the book are unity candles, for example or the ever-growing in popularity, wedding coordinator. The book was overly cute and wasted a lot of reader's time trying to be funny, which was entertaining, but not all that appreciated in a wedding guide. Potential problems that one could face in planning a Catholic wedding were skimmmed over too-lightly.

This book reflects a respect for the Catholic faith and describes the parts of a Catholic Nuptial Mass. The authors are friendly and helpful. This is by no means a complete wedding guide (buy Bridal Bargains and Weddings for Dummies for that), but this book offers valuable information regarding the Catholic wedding. This book is much better than Your Catholic Wedding by Chris Aridas. I highly recommend "The Catholic Wedding Book.""The Catholic Wedding Book" offers suggestions on appropriate music for the Nuptial Mass, as well as Old and New Testament readings, Gospel reading, psalms and hymns. The chapter "The Script," is especially helpful. |
