Review

Unique among books released by Mormon publishing houses, Eric Shuster's "Catholic Roots Mormon Harvest," will appeal to Catholics as much as it will interest members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book's very design is to highlight the similarities and differences between Mormonism and Catholicism, and consequently much of the book will be review from a reader familiar with either. The decades he spent as a non-Mormon give Shuster a distinctive vernacular, though, that gives even the most well-known doctrines a fresh makeover. Throughout the 261 pages, Shuster makes clear his love for both faiths. As he writes on page 83, "...I wasn't giving up anything in becoming a Latter-day Saint and was in fact gaining so much more in reaping the harvest." --Molly Farmer, Mormon Times

The Trinity January 6, 2011

"Catholic Roots Mormon Harvest" is a very readable book. The many references to the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" are helpful.

The Catechism presents the doctrine of the Trinity as "the most fundamental and essential teaching" of the Catholic faith, and so I was hoping for a careful presentation on the subject.

Shuster wonders "how three beings can be three beings but not three beings, but only one being, God", yet the Catholic Church does not refer to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as "three beings" but as "three persons in one being". In Catholic theology the terms "being" and "person" answer two different questions: the author does not seem to be aware about this critical difference. He also asks "Why was Jesus praying to himself in the Garden of Gethsemane?", as if Trinitarian theology denies the distinction of the persons.

Such misunderstandings could have been avoided by sticking more closely to the Catechism:

There is one and only one God.
Each person is the one and only one God.
The persons are really distinct.
They are really distinct by reason of their relationships.

Frank Sheed's "Theology for Beginners" and "Theology and Sanity" are invaluable in explaining these points.

I was a non-active Catholic when I ordered this book, but had become very interested in the Mormon faith and was looking for a detailed comparison of doctrines and beliefs of the two faiths. This book helped me to understand the similarities and differences between the two churches, and consequently, helped me in my conversion to the Mormon faith (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). The author did a great job answering questions that I had about Mormonism compared to Catholicism and really explained things that I had not previously understood. An interesting book for both Catholics and Mormons; the author presents both faiths in a very positive way, although definitely from the viewpoint of a Mormon convert.

I'm always intrigued at the conversion stories of others. This book is more than just a conversion story. It is an in-depth comparison between Catholicism and Mormonism by an author that has been directly involved in both.

Eric shares his remarkable conversion story in an easy conversational flow with bits of humor here and there. I was filled with joy as a read of the spiritual experiences that Eric shares with us all. Eric puts forth the most complete comparison of Catholicism and Mormonism that I have ever seen, providing ample references as well as his thoughts and commentary on 40 doctrines and practices.

This book is an excellent resource for all honest truth seekers.

--- John Webster, author of the LDS Resources Website
