Book Description

Is modern environmentalism compatible with Christianity? Bishop Dominique Rey provides answers to this critical question in this theological reflection on the relationships among God, man, and nature. More than a critique of secular environmentalism’s idolatry of nature, Rey’s primary purpose is to show Catholics and other Christians how they can view the environment in a way consistent with sacred Scripture, tradition, and magisterial teaching. Drawing on Scripture, the insights of Church Fathers, and recent magisterial teaching on ecological issues, Rey stresses that if we lose a correct understanding of man’s relationship to God and how that relationship shapes man’s self-understanding, then our capacity to think coherently about ecological subjects corrodes.

Bishop Rey gets into the issues that surround a sound Christian ecological perspective. Dismissing views that are either secular or pantheistic that place more emphasis on the environment than on humanity, Rey draws out the rich resources find in the Bible and in previous declarations given by Benedict, John Paul II and others, to bring together a more robustly biblical view that values creation, man, and the telos of the entire created order. I enjoyed this book and its hearty emphasis on both the goodness of creations, the dignity of man, and the charge that man has to steward well what he has been given. The short length of the book is also good to dip into if you don't have the time for a longer work. I will admit that I think the book needed to add some practical suggestions to aid in caring for the creation God has made.
