Book Description

A collection of folk tales about cats from all parts of the world, including "The Magic Ring" and "Why the Cat Washes His Paws After Eating."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 Although many of these 13 tales can be found in other anthologies, here they are conveniently gathered in one volume. Many nations are represented. From Africa comes "Dividing the Cheese," in which a monkey settles a dispute between two cats. There's also a Swedish version of "Puss in Boots" entitled "The Princess of Cattenborg." Some of the tales are less familiar, such as "A Place to Live," an Israeli tale about why cats choose to eat and sleep in the sunny kitchen of a kind-hearted woman. The simple writing style and uncomplicated plots allow young readers and listeners access to these tales, but some of the majestic language is lost. The collection is well-documented; Zaum lists all the sources she used in her adaptions with complete bibliographic information. She also offers a bibliography of additional cat tales. The scratchy black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings add little. They do not extend the text, nor are they particularly decorative. Of most interest to cat lovers. Karen K. Radtke , Milwaukee Pub. Lib.
