Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Barry, a practicing witch, has collaborated with well-known SF and horror writer Strieber in this very uneven novel. In a sense the book is a spokespiece for witchcraftand is most interesting as suchnot black magic witchcraft, but the ancient wisdom of worshipping the earth and the seasons, of living with and respecting nature and the holy in people and animals. The story focuses on young Amanda Walker, who has come to rural Maywell to work with Constance Collier on her latest book. But Constance is really a witch, the spiritual leader of a large coven, and unbeknownst to Amanda she has picked the girl to be her successor. To complicate matters, Amanda's eccentric uncle George, who is involved in research in resuscitating the dead, has finally gone over the edge and is looking for a healthy young woman as his next subject. And Brother Simon Pierce, local fundamentalist preacher, himself quite mad, is determined to enforce the Biblical injunction, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." The book is burdened with erratic pacing and frequent and jarring mood changes, but almost in spite of its clunky style, it often manages to entertain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Fantasy!, March 29, 2001

This is a great book to read, if you can find a copy. It has elements of paganism, fantasy & horror. A young woman's experiences in a small community, clashes between a pagan compound and a local christain group.

The wild hunt bit in this book is great! Wonderful fantasy book for pagan readers!

This book has the possibility of changing the way the world works. The community represented in this work is an atainable nirvana for the global community. The author has done a beautiful job of weaving suspense, romance and biographical information into a tale that will bring you into a different state of conciousness. I hope the publisher will get this book back into print soon. I lost my copy and I can't feature going into 2000 without it. I read it over 10 years ago, and the story still pulls at my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of research went into this book!, September 2, 1998

This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of THE BEST Wiccan books I've ever read! I've read it at least 5 times and am reading it again. I recommend it to everyone I know! The author did a tremendous amount of research before starting & it shows! There are very few discrepancies between the book and real life Wicca (which I've practiced for some time). The descriptions make me want to be part of Maywell's little town. The homestead in the book is a dream all witches I know have! Read it!!!!
