5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Fantasy!, March 29, 2001
By
This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great book to read, if you can find a copy. It has elements of paganism, fantasy & horror. A young woman's experiences in a small community, clashes between a pagan compound and a local christain group.

The wild hunt bit in this book is great! Wonderful fantasy book for pagan readers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for the New Age of the World, December 4, 1999

This book has the possibility of changing the way the world works. The community represented in this work is an atainable nirvana for the global community. The author has done a beautiful job of weaving suspense, romance and biographical information into a tale that will bring you into a different state of conciousness. I hope the publisher will get this book back into print soon. I lost my copy and I can't feature going into 2000 without it. I read it over 10 years ago, and the story still pulls at my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of research went into this book!, September 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of THE BEST Wiccan books I've ever read! I've read it at least 5 times and am reading it again. I recommend it to everyone I know! The author did a tremendous amount of research before starting & it shows! There are very few discrepancies between the book and real life Wicca (which I've practiced for some time). The descriptions make me want to be part of Maywell's little town. The homestead in the book is a dream all witches I know have! Read it!!!!

Not for the closed-minded, certainly. Most of the characters being witches, and Christianity being portrayed more-or-less positively but Christians themselves being portrayed as motivated by fear and guilt, even in their attempts to be loving. The witch commune in this book lives off the land for the most part, but many of them commute to jobs in the city. They live in peace and love and in harmony with the earth. The afterlife, in the eyes of the author, is whatever we make it, whether a hell to atone for our guilt or a land of eternal summer once we've come to terms with our guilt. The story goes a little overboard, because to become Maiden of the covenstead, Amanda has to pass through death and return to life - this may have been done in ages past, but no one in the Craft (to my knowledge) does this today - I'm sure they'd lose too many candidates this way and have too many lawsuits! The faery folk are a little frightening, capable of being both benevolent and dangerous. The Wild Hunt is exhilarating. The ending is bittersweet. Overall, a good read, makes you hungry to learn more about things like astral projection and psychic links, and being in tune with our earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..wonderful! Please, please, reprint it!, April 2, 2000
This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
Alongside 'The Talisman' by Stephen King & Peter Straub, this is my equal favourite book of all time.

I found that I could relate so well to the characters within the community, especially to the 'new recruit' who is an Illustrator like myself. The constant recognition of parts of my own psyche as they were gradually unveiled sent shivers down my spine.

The plot is in parts thrilling, terrifying, surreal, sickening; in others exciting, emotional, even erotic.

The coven/community (without wishing to give too much away) will undoubtedly appeal to anyone with an interest in Wicca, Earth Magick or the Western Tradition, as an ideal to which we may all aspire, but also serves to draw to the attention of all humankind just how cruel, thoughtless and intolerant we all are, and how much better the world could be if only we opened our minds and spirits and tried to live beyond the mundane.

Unfortunately, I loaned my copy of the book to a friend some years ago and it was never returned. As I am longing to read it again (and keep this precious piece of literature forever), I implore the publishers to reprint in as soon as possible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully moving and heartfelt, makes you long for more!, August 5, 2004

I loved this book. I've read it 3 times. I don't have enough words to describe the passion this story evokes in me. Full of magick of the rawest kind, and just enough danger to keep your blood pumping. When I read this book I long to live at Constance Colliers witch village. Oh, if only there was such a place!! This is a great work of art.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun little read, October 19, 2001

Despite the cheesy cover art, Whitley Streiber put together a pleasant little read in his pre-Communion days. He has the usual trouble male authors frequently have when trying to write about the intimate thoughts and feelings of a woman, but otherwise it is good enough. I did, however, keep thinking of questions he had left unanswered after I finished the book. Naughty Whitley.

5.0 out of 5 stars To think and believe what others are afraid to, July 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
This had to be the best book I have ever read. I couldn't put it down until I was through. You can tell that a lot of time and effort went into this novel which makes it all the more interesting to read. Whitley Strieber is one of the best writers of all time, he writes down things that sometimes people think about and how they sometimes wish they could be. It was so interesting that it makes people wish they could be a part of the little town of Maywell. Wouldn't we all like to be Marian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Imagery, June 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Catmagic (Mass Market Paperback)
Well as I am No great writer, I'll make this short and shiny. The imagery in this book was amazing, throughout the book I felt as if I were part of the Covenstead, as if I was there to see all that was occuring,I gained feelings for Amanda Walker, Robin and also a slight pang of sympathy for Constance. The book created a wall of unexplainable atmosphere for me . In a short conclusion I reccommend this book to any one with an intrest in witchcraft, or alternative communities. I am dying to read more from Strieber.
