5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Humor
I got this book on Friday and read it through twice within 48 hours, laughing more loudly the second time, and rushing to find someone that I could share excerpts from the book. Even though the book was first published 45 years ago, it has not gone out of style. Anyone who has Siamese cats today can still identify with Ms. Tovey's experiences with Sugeih, Solomon and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Cats in the Belfry
Most Americans will understand what I mean when I say "this was done by an English author". That should cover the whole book. For some you may not realize I didn't like the book and would love to have my money returned. There is no story to the book. She tells you a few things the cats do but there is NO STORY! Sometimes things are funny because you are there. The...

Even though the book was first published 45 years ago, it has not gone out of style. Anyone who has Siamese cats today can still identify with Ms. Tovey's experiences with Sugeih, Solomon and Sheba. I can't recommend this book enough and encourage an enterprising publisher to put all of Ms. Tovey's books back in print so everyone in the world can read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love 'em or hate 'em, June 24, 2002

No matter what you think of cats, sitting down with this book will give you a quiet chuckle.

If you are among those unfortunates who have yet to discover the joys of being owned by a cat, you will be able to indulge the ever-pleasant pass-time of feeling smugly superior to this poor deluded couple who find themselves willing slaves to their delightful but demanding Siamese.

If you are one of the lucky ones currently living under the paw of a common or garden variety moggie, you will be able to breathe a sigh of relief and think "it could be worse" as you search the supermarket shelves for their favourite brand of cat food (without which you dare not show your face at home).

And if you are one of the fortune-favoured (?) few who have lost your heart (and possibly your reason) to a Siamese, you will enjoy the consolation of knowing that at least you're not alone.

The book is a delight for cat lovers and non cat lovers alike. Warm, wry and witty, it encourages empathy without expecting conversion. One of my absolute favourite cat books. And if you enjoy it, there's also a sequel - "Cats in May".

This has to be one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I laughed until I had tears running down my face, and also cried for a particularly sad part. I honestly don't think I have ever been so moved by a book. I read this book twice in the first week that I had it. If you have the oppurtunity to read or buy this book, please do so!

5.0 out of 5 stars An often humorous, often sad book keeping you to the end., February 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cats in the Belfry (Paperback)
Cats In The Belfry by Doreen is the first book in a series about her Blue Point cats. Right from the very first page, you can tell that this book is going to have a lot of funny parts. As you finish the first few chapters it is virtually impossible to put down because the story just continues smootly. When you do eventually reach the end, you will want to read it again because just once is not enough to enjoy the book 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Siamese cat lovers., July 15, 1999

This review is from: Cats in the Belfry (Paperback)
This is one of the few books I have ever read that made me laugh out loud. No one writes about animals like the British. A joy from start to finish. I hope it will be back in print soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely Funny and Entertaining!!, February 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cats in the Belfry (Paperback)
Anyone who has ever owned a Siamese cat will thuroughly enjoy this read. This publication, with it's "tounge in cheek" humor, wonderfully and acurately depicts the unusual and entertaining events that occur in a household where together, Siamese cats and their "owners" reside.

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed out loud so often at this story. Audio cd 3 hrs 40min listening, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Cats in the Belfry (Hardcover)
What an incredible story. I was travelling to Japan and was listening to a story that was so boring, I gave up. Then I remembered that CATS IN THE BELFREY was recommended as a light funny story for any cat lovers and thought perfect for a long flight.

How embarassing I kept on laughing out loud and people would turn around.
I had my noise reduction headphones on and couldn't hear anything else but the story. I was totally engrossed.

I have owned 6 cats in my life and my eyes really flew open at the antics of these Siamese. What beautiful regal looking cats who can really get up to mischief. Any cat owner will really relate to the antics of these cats. From jumping into the bath to save father from drowning (he had to learn to shut the door), the smelliest oldest dead animal being dragging into the house to chasing and scaring horses with learner riders on their backs going past the front of their house.

The light hearted stories join together beautifully. I rarely give a 5 star review, but this story is now in my top 10 best stories ever.
NOW THAT SAYS SOMETHING!!!!!

When I read this book, I was in an airport, and I had to hide my face in my coat because I couldn't stop laughing. If you have ever been owned by a siamese cat, this is a book you just have to read, I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life long addiction, July 4, 2009
I first read Cats in the Belfry when I was in the seventh grade. A friend was given a copy for her birthday and she was kind enough to loan it to me. I've followed Doreen Tovey's delightful shenanigans with her husband, cats, donkeys and various other animals ever since. For those who like to view their animals with bemused humor these are wonderful books.
