Editorial Reviews

How can you hate a movie that features ninja Siamese cats wreaking havoc with their kung fu prowess? That's one of the highlights in Cats & Dogs, an effects-laden family film that mystifies cat fanciers by casting dogs as the undisputed heroes in all-out warfare with nefarious felines. Hidden headquarters and high-tech gadgets are featured on both sides of this age-old battle. On the feline side, the longhaired Persian Mr. Tinkles (voice of Sean Hayes) plots to sabotage the efforts of Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs. On the canine side, stalwart shepherd Butch (voice of Alec Baldwin) trains the mistakenly recruited beagle puppy Lou (voice of Tobey Maguire) to foil Mr. Tinkles's scheme--a mission that begins when Mrs. Brody (Elizabeth Perkins) adopts Lou for her son Scott (Alexander Pollock).

Using combinations of live animals, animatronic puppets, and digital wizardry, Cats & Dogs has just enough imagination to match its effects, climaxing with a feline global-domination scheme involving mice sprayed with chemicals that will make all humans allergic to dogs. Goldblum and Perkins gamely play second fiddles to this menagerie of mayhem, and as madcap "realism" gives way to cartoonish fantasy, the movie escalates into utter chaos, burdened by lame jokes but highlighted by a furry supporting cast including a Saluki hound (voice of Susan Sarandon), a shaggy sheepdog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan), and a Chinese hairless techno-geek named Peek (voice of Joe Pantoliano). Though never as charming as the Babe movies, Cats & Dogs is harmless fun--especially for dog lovers. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, June 29, 2001
By A Customer
Tired of taking your kids to a family movie and finding it's neither for them or you?

Cat's and Dog's is wonderful family entertainment. I went with the neighbor's kids and they couldn't stop turning to me with a "Hey this is cool," look in their eyes.

I was entertained.

The film is witty, innocent, fun and winking here and there at adults.

Kids will love the adventure.

This is not Shrek where you wonder if my kid should of heard that or seen that... etc.

This is much better.

So bring your friends and as many kids as you can find. Everyone will have a ball... and be on the look out for the Russian Spy kitty.

Sincerly, J.R.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very funny movie, July 16, 2002

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When the unlucky pup, Lou (voice provided by Tobey Maguire), finds himself selected for a new home, he is quite happy. However, Lou was not supposed to go to that home. It seems that the eccentric Professor Brody (played by Jeff Goldblum) is working on a formula that will end allergies to dogs. However, the evil cat, Mr. Tinkles (Sean Hayes) will stop at nothing to seize the Brody's, and it is up to the dog secret agents - and Lou ' to protect them. Is Lou up to the task? Watch and see! [Color, released in 2001, with a running time of 1 hour, 27 minutes.]

This is a very funny movie. It is rated PG, but this is apparently for the violence between the cats and dogs, which is carried on in a cartoonish manner that no one in my family found disturbing. Instead, the whole clan enjoyed this hilarious movie, and we all highly recommend it to you and your family!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the summer movie to see!, June 29, 2001
Forget Lara Croft, Jurrasic Part 95 - grab the kids, the grandparents and roar the station wagon over to the cineplex to see this movie! Like Toy Story 2 this movie is good for children and hysterical for adults! The evil Mr. Tinkles is the best Villan - right up there with Autsin Power's Dr. Evil! This movie is a highlight of the summer - you'll laugh you'll cry you'll nuzzle your pet when you get home! I always thought my dog was smarter than 3/4 of the human population now I know he is for sure! Don't miss the Ninja fighting cats - too good!!
