Let Kids Grow-Into This One - a review of "Cats",
This review is from: Cats (Hardcover)
The first thing you should know about this book is that there are no photographs. Instead there are colorful drawings, the sort that appeal to younger children but which don't necessarily have enough detail to be helpful to older kids. There is also no index nor chapters to this book which is odd since it's reading level indicates that it's meant to be read by 'entering' 4th Graders. [The Accelerated Reading (ATOS) designation is 4.1] On the plus side, most cat-topics are touched upon. Ms. Gibbons talks about the African wildcat ancestors, Egyptians-and-cats, cat breeds, cat physiology, and cat behavior, but not in great detail, which again, an older child might want. The best use of this book, in my opinion, would be as a resource on a home bookshelf-- but only if it's purchased when the child is young. A younger child can enjoy the pictures and enjoy having the book read to them and it can still use it when they are older, although it might have to be supplemented if they are doing a report, or if they are looking for more indepth materials. Four Stars [B-] Pam T~

Cats by Gail Gibbons,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cats (Paperback)
Gail Gibbons is fabulous! Her books are highly educational and informative and at the same time a whole lot of fun for the kids to read and look at. The illustrations in Cats are fantastic. I am a teacher and find her books to be very resourceful, and the children love them. Cats is a particular favorite because children just naturally love cats!
