I'm sure that you have a few cookbooks in your collection that you enjoy, but for some reason you never do get around to cooking from them. Maybe the ingredients are hard to get, or you have a simpler recipe in another cookbook. There's nothing wrong with those cookbooks; they're fun, pretty, inspirational. It's just a reading-cookbook rather than a regular instruction book.
To my surprise, that's how I feel about Cat's Meow: Purr-fect Quilts for Cat Lovers. As a devoted cat person, and an enthusiastic (if not anywhere near expert) quilter, I had hoped to find several quilts that would let me indulge in more than one of my passions. However, every time I flip through the pages of this book... well, I end up cooking something else for dinner, so to speak. I'm not completely sure why; perhaps it's because the designs expect you to use a lot of scraps (I'm not a scrap quilter), or they're just an eensy bit too cutesy. It might also be that, to my mild surprise, none of the designs are suited to use all the kitty fabrics that I've been collecting. Probably, the main reason that I haven't felt compelled to use any of these designs is that the instructions aren't completely clear; it doesn't give me a sense of confidence that this will come together sensibly. I don't dislike the book; it deserves its 4 stars, and I've no intention of giving it away. On the other hand, I'm not worrying that I'll wear out the book's binding.

This book is SO CUTE! Even if you don't make a quilt from it, it makes you feel good just looking through it. The colors are happy and the patterns aren't hard. Good instructions and designs and inspiration from Janet Kime! It's one of my top five favorite quilt books--I love it!

This review is from: Cat's Meow : Purr-fect Quilts for Cat Lovers (Paperback)
As both a cat lover and a quilter, I had to buy this book. I made "The Motley Crew" quilt and liked it very much, and even made another for a friend. It's a well written and illustrated book offering many different cat quilts for anyone's taste. Spend the money and buy it---you'll enjoy it!

Clear instructions and great ideas. I used the idea of matching cats and spools, but changed it to dogs and bones.

In order to make room for more quilt books I've been looking through all of the books I have and have made quite of pile of discards. This isn't one of them. There are 25 cat quilts and 2 dog quilts. Of the cat quilts I would like to make 7 - which is over 28%; I consider this to be darn good.
I love the "Puss in Bonnets" quilt and "Puss in the Center." The "Puss in the Center" quilt will be easy to make with colorful squares at the corners of the block and in the center are cats cut out of other fabrics to applique. This is great for me because I have quite a collection of leftover cat fabrics and can actually put them to good use. There are two "kitty faces" quilts but what they really are is the shape of a cat's head, front view. One of the quilts uses colorful fabrics on a red background and the other, my favorite, uses light to dark fabrics in ecru, taupes, browns to the darkest, blacks. I love the log cabin cats (2 quilts) and plaid quilts. Some of my other favorite quilts are variations of the above mentioned quilts. I plan on making gifts for several of my cat friends. By the way, the quilts range in size from a 24" square to 70" x 80" and, of course, you can easily make any quilt larger or smaller.

This is a great book for cat lovers if you are looking for whimsical patterns not realistic patterns. I especially like the tesselation patterns.
