The Ultimate Pastry Board!,
By Carole (Suwanee, Georgia (suburb of Atlanta) United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Catskill Craftsmen Wood Pastry Board with Baking Graphics (Kitchen)
This board has many features not described. Although it is very large, it will probably find a permanent home on your kitchen counter since it is multi-functional. First, there is a basic recipe on the board for plain pastry. In addition to having measurements in lenght, width, and 4 different diameters (including diameter for a tart), flip it over and you have the perfect cutting board with wide gooves on each side to catch liquids or other unwanted materials. It is made of solid wood that is of the highest quality; it is worth every penny. This demanding cook could not be more pleased.

Nice pastry board, but not a cutting board,

As advertised, this is a pastry board: it is *not* a cutting board. It has no grooves, and is not end-cut (so will tend to warp if it gets a lot of liquid on it over time). It is quite large, and the markings are very useful, with one exception: they tried to include both English and Metric units, but arranged them wrong! The English units are *only* lengthwise along the board, and the Metric are *only* width-wise -- that doesn't make any sense: if you were using one set of units (and who isn't!!) you want to use the same units for both dimensions. I don't roll out 12 inch by 30 centimeter crusts! Also, it has no feet, so you will want to place a wet towel under it while you are rolling things out to keep it from slipping.
Pros: 1) Large, sturdy board 2) Useful markings for rolling pie crust 3) Overall high quality and good for what it is advertised for Cons: 1) Not useful as a cutting board (but they don't advertise it as such) 2) Inclusion of two unit systems is not useful as laid out on the board 3) No feet, so need a non-skid pad when working

Great Pastry Board for your baking needs,

This board is a handy when you need to make a pie crust that needs to be a certain diameter because the diagram is all laid out for you. I have an old tupperware plastic roll-out graphic pastry board and it got warped real quick. This is wonderful. The only problem is storage. It doesn't fit in my standard size cabinet, but it does fit in the pantry on it's side (so it doesn't take up too much room).

I agree with the other gals reviews. This pastry board is the ultimate! A great value for such a low price. It's huge, is double sided & is easy to move around without breaking your back! You won't be dissappointed! I love mine & highly recommend it to everyone!

I think this is an excellent product - esp. for the value. Williams-Sonoma has one for like 80 bucks, and it's better, but too expensive. For the price I am very pleased and would not trade it in for the WS model. I also like that it is made in NY state - more an more things today are made by people of other lands so it's nice to keep Americans working. This type of pastry board is very handy for making crusts - of which I make a lot. THe recipe on the board is what I use but I add 1 tsp of sugar and I usually use 1 stick of unsalted butter instead of all Crisco. People love my pies so I must be doing something right...

Finish is rough and only a veneer,

I was very excited to get this board and have used it several times for making fresh pasta. The first thing I noticed was that it was very rough - as one other reviewer wrote - and oiling it did not help. The next thing that happened was that it warped. Lastly, I pulled it out the other day to discover that the wood is only a veneer and has started to peel. Cheaply priced and cheaply made.

I love having the edge measurements as well as the circular measurments. I wish I had a cabinet big enough for this wonder tool, but like some of my favorite baking sheets, this will have to live on top of the counter. After use, it cleans up very nicely, and a coat of mineral oil makes it look like a million dollars. I'm very satisfied.

I'd like to first correct the popular but old April 1, 2001 review. This board no longer has grooves on the other side; it's just a smooth surface, but that's still very usable. Second, it does come with an insert that you can mail out for an 8oz bottle of Catskill Butcher Block Oil for $4.95, which seems to be roughly the price that goes for online, but this includes the cost of shipping. The instructions printed on the board are convenient, but a little dough can get stuck in these slight impressions, which a dough scraper will glide over. Lastly, my board had a small .5cm splinter off to the side that my scraper got caught on. I'll have to sand that portion down now.
All that said, for the low price of 17 dollars I paid, this is a very nice, large pastry board.

I love the size of this board- lots of surface area but not so heavy that I can't move it easily. The wood is high quality, looks nice. In addition to the pastry templates, there are ruling increments on the back that are in cm as well as inches. Both sides are smooth.

I am teaching my son to cook/bake and this turned out to be one of my best purchases. He was able to easily roll out dough for cinnamon rolls. They look professional and he was very proud! I have used this to roll out the perfect size for pizza too. I highly recommend it.
