Catskill Craftsmen Wood Utilty Board with Groove

I was searching for a cutting board in a good size that comes with a groove, came across this and according to the reviews, everything seems positive. Boy, was I disappointed!

I've carefully oiled the board with mineral oil almost everyday for the first week I bought the board, and wash it with mild soap and water as instructed. However, there seems to be fuzz (or rather splinters!) on both surfaces of the board. I tried to oil the board again, but it still seems dry (though it has never been used). I couldn't risk having my food stuck with splinters from the board, and therefore had never gotten around to use it. I'd rather go with a Henckels board anytime.

A waste of money, would not recommend.

Where else can you get a high quality wooden cutting board of this size for such a great price. It works so much better then those cheap platic cutting boards, plus the channel keeps any juice from flowing onto your counter. I'd like to see a plastic cutting board do that. I highly reccomend this low price high quality board.

This is a very nice piece of wood. It looks great and works much better than those plastic things that slide all over the place. *And the insert with the board said not to worry about bacteria as the plastic ones were actually better at harboring unwanted bacteria! Very reassuring and a nice board!

I bought Model 1318, big rugged endgrain cutting board from Catskill Craftsmen. Best board I ever bought but you do have to put a lot of mineral oil on the endgrain.

the groove in this cutting board is a fantastic idea. it keeps liquids (like from fruits or veges) from spilling over onto the countertop. it's a great value, and i would recommend it to anyone.

This is a nice quality, medium sized cutting board. Well worth the money, doesn't take up my entire counter, looks good, works appropriately. Just good stuff!

This is reasonable value as it is very inexpensive, and a nice size, but it is not particularly well made. After a couple years it started to warp and split. The gutter leaks when the board starts splitting.

I'd go easier on this product if the word "craftsmen" weren't in the name. It's not a crafted product; it's cheaply mass produced from mystery hardwoods, and barely finished. That said, it's reasonably priced for what it is. A little work with a palm sander and some food grade oil/wax can make it a bit nicer.

The best feature of this product is the size: it fits comfortably inside a half-sheet pan, which makes it useful to use as a carving board. the gutter along the outside is not wide or deep enough to catch all the juices that might drip from a big roast or bird (this is the case with any similar board) so putting the board in a sheet pan is a simple solution. It allows you to carry the board with the roast on it from stove to counter to table with no worry of dripping. I put rubber feet on the bottom of my board to elevate the top surface a bit above the rim of the sheet pan. This gives some clearance for knives.

Speaking of knives, I would not use this board as a general prep board. It uses edge grain construction and woods of unknown type and hardness. It will not be especially friendly on your knife edges. It's also too small for serious prep work. If you're an occasional cook this stuff will make little difference to you, but if you're serious, you should get the biggest board you have room for, made of suitable hardwoods (maple, cherry, mahogany, wallnut), ideally with end grain construction. It will cost more than this thing, but will be more than worth it.

Board is indeed a quality board, but with a name like Craftsmen, I had expected a bit higher quality.
