About the Author
Norman J. Van Valkenburgh is the recognized historic authority on New York State’s Forest Preserve in the Catskills and Adirondacks. Van Valkenburgh’s professional career was devoted to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, where he worked from 1955 until his retirement in 1986. At the department Van Valkenburgh began as a land surveyor, then joined the Bureau of Land Acquisition at the Albany headquarters in 1961. He served as chief of the Bureau of Land Acquisition from 1973 to 1976, regional director of the NYSDEC office in New Paltz from 1976 to 1978, and finally as director of the NYSDEC Division of Lands and Forests in Albany from 1978 to 1986.
