Product Description

This is the story of Mike Todd, largely as he told it himself. It forms a true folk biography or, more exactly, an autobiography. During the years since Mike recorded his story, I have supplemented his recollections with testimony from people who knew him at various stages of his life."

Mike Todd(1877-1960) was a bear hunter, a fire observer, a water witch, a raftsman, a quarryman, a musician, a poacher, but most of all, he was a storyteller, the central Catskills most famous.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine peek into a bygone era, March 9, 2009
By Russ (Northern Marianas) - See all my reviews
I first heard of Mike Todd in Norman Studer's Folkways recording: "All the Homespun Days." Mike emerged as a fine, crazy, honest (though sometimes drunk) bear hunter and woodsman. In later life, Mike taught many of the visiting children some of the secrets of the woods (the Catskills) and how to 'read' the woods, and survive. This book - though not perfect - provides a glimpse into the life of a real, honest man. He tried everything, including playing the banjo, the spoons, blacksmithing, and fire warden. But Mike was, at heart, a bear hunter - and this makes the book immensely interesting. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A friend of the family, September 6, 2004
By Robert Cleary "Bob Cleary" (Jersey City, New Jersey USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mile Todd was a neighbor and friend of my Aunt Josie and Uncle Louie. Mike lived "down the road a piece, around the bend" (as close as you can be across the road in a mountain area). After reading it I really missed going up there. I was surprised he had died when I was about 10 (1960). With all the stories I thought he was still alive. Some of the stories I head about him are not in the book. Like when he would walk from "the tower" to Margaretville (about a four hour walk along trails over the mountains) to get some whiskey. On his way back, at night, when he got tired, he would step off the trail, crawl under a bush and go to sleep. Some of the book is easier to read out load. The author tried to get the sound of their accent.
